Last week, Tehlu requested a glossary of lucrim terminology, since keeping up with details can be harder when spread out over so many weeks. I don't know that I can maintain a glossary over the long term, but I've kick-started a reader-run reference in the form of this doc:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1p-u8Twp4Op9woqdbRjZvnXqm7Xhf3f_4CNwRYQ4vZz8/edit?usp=sharing

That contains a chunk of information, including some definitions and my answer to a question last week. Feel free to add questions/answers as you see fit. Anyway, on to this week's chapters!

So he's got the Dark Blood Kettle and the upgrade to Bunyan's step via the very pretentious pill. His remaining routes for upgrade, that we know about, are the jackalope elixir and whatever Granny Whitney is going to send him. Maybe there's also something coming with that Demon Mass he's got lodged in his soul? Also Rick's shown a lot of growth in this book. He's still got some ways to go, but at the start of book 1 Rick was so afraid of entanglements, and now he seems to know how to use them for his benefit, and where the limit should be. Here's hoping his bet works out for him.

Here comes the Rumble! I love the fight buildups.

Typo: your -> you in "I'll consider your deeply in my debt."

If everybody else is joining a team, why is it more risky for Rick to join up with Damien? and why would that mean he's forfeiting the competition? Also, even though Melissa has her Ether Void under control, shouldn't it still show up on her portfolio. my understanding was that its also meant to be growing as her generation rate grows (sprinkled with some flare-ups).

LordMarksman

Yeah... it literally makes no sense for him to bring Melissa. I know she is talented and has special build but she is far too green. WAY too green to be playing at these stakes, Emily by far would be the better choice. I get and respect Melissa wanting to help her brother but even if it would hurt her feelings Rick shouldn't take her. Rick people are planning to cripple if not kill you why would you even consider this!!! Emily is the better prospect in pretty much every category! I mean Emily has like 80,000+ lucrim, far more experience, more decisive in fight, and considering how intensely they spar/fight more aware what each other can do and reading cues. I know Rick trains with Melissa too but its not the same. Its not the same at all, as her brother he may push her hard but never all the way like him and Emily do. The only advantage Melissa brings here is her whole Void flame bit but how effective is that going to be on serious fighters who outstrip her by huge amount unless they are cocky as sin but even then they can power through and put some serious hurt. Melissa is less than half (even if her growth rate is amazing) of Rick. I can't see how he would think this is a good idea when it is quite obvious that things are likely to go very very wrong and he is AWARE things are likely going to be bad here. Can someone explain to me the thought process? Because I would legitimately like to know and be made to understood. Up to this point I have more or less understood Rick's decisions and why he did things but I don't get this at all.

sarahlin

Yeah, my intention was to have Rick in the first book struggling just to keep his head above water, while in the second book he comes to grips with his circumstances a bit. Ideally we'll continue with slow growth of character/agency along with power.

sarahlin

Because Damian insisted on terms that require him to come out of the contest in position to join the GLA, which would require Rick to sacrifice his benefits. The top competitors mostly choose their teams from lower rankers.

sarahlin

Rick can and will take more than one person, and Emily is definitely his first choice. As for how they intend to use Melissa, you'll see in a few chapters; I hope you think it makes strategic sense. It's unquestionably meant to be a risky decision on Rick's part, though.

Cteatus

It seems like void flame based techniques are super useful against whatever creatures come through these eruptions. Melissa being able to just straight no-sell some of the lesser ones, while Rick and Emily can focus on the greater ones and other competitors, would be pretty valuable. It is gambling quite a bit on Melissa's void techniques though.

LordMarksman

Melissa just feels too high risk. For one thing if he brings her I don't think Rick would be able to fully focus on situation on hand and it would be quite easy to see she is his vulnerable point too. Melissa gets badly injured he is going to freak out because that is his baby sister who he loves. The dream team for Rick in this situation would be Emily, Delsim, and perhaps Rick's old boss at the gym if he could manage it. You need people who are legit fighters in your corner. Of course easier said than done in this case. I suppose Emily is a choice too but I don't think she would fair that well in addition to how incredibly awkward that could make team dynamics to say the least. Honestly Rick needs to treat Emily better, admittedly he has a lot on his plate but if he values their friendship and wants to keep it something needs to be done.

Jack's vendetta aside, the goal of the competition is to fight the anomalies, not each other. On that front, we already know from Rick's last fight with them that her black flame can defeat even powerful ones. Manifest Destruction creates an area of effect that selectively target enemies while ignoring friends and can at minimum erode every anomalies in the area if not outright destroy them. I think that alone makes Melissa a viable support.

Desertopa

Rick is probably going to take Emily, but apart from almost certainly not agreeing to come, Delsin isn't even an option. He's a cruiserweight, two classes away from Rick.

Chong Go

My biggest fear for Melissa is that in revealing her talent, she'll come to the attention of the big three. It sounds like she has quite a rare talent, essentially unknown and very deadly, which they'd want to use so they'll try to coerce her into being their personal assassin.

Rick is treating Emily well enough, considering she expects him to come with her to help murder a lot of people. Emily helping Rick to protect himself is a lot different than her expecting him to go on a murder revenge spree with her.

LordMarksman

I'm going to be honest with you, that was my bad. You see when I responded I was really tired so I totally messed up names. I meant he needs to treat Lisa better. You know the one who makes the serums he tries out, helps with massages, and was totally into Rick? I meant he needs to treat her better. Emily yeah.... that was pretty heavy because that sort of commitment is a bit different than the one Rick was expecting which I totally don't blame him for.
