With how much things have been going poorly for Rick, this sure was satisfying to watch.

Cameron C

That was great. His struggles have somewhat paid off fighting people stronger than him.

I know you probably won't do it. But I think it be very to have Lisa or one of Rick's friends listen to what happen and tell him to report his family for mail fraud. Aura Leeches exist for a reason and I feel like it would help show Rick is getting more used to the greater world around him and starting to learn how to use the system to his advantage for once, even if it means doing something a morally grey as sicking aura leeches on his dead beat family.

Haha, this isn't going to happen, but for the record I think it's an amazing idea.

Reporting his family for mail fraud is justified but it’s also not morally grey, it’s the vindictive & arsehole thing to do. Especially seeing as any aura leech would literally break them. I personally like Ricks empathy, there’s a trend towards morally grey to downright arsehole lead characters and Rick is a breath of fresh air. He understands his world and has chosen his own way of dealing with it. Understanding the world you live in does not mean succumbing to its vileness. But that’s just me. Still the moral battle for his ethics/soul would be interesting to watch. Will he choose to lash out Nd give into darker nature or will he choose be a person he (or more specifically his sister) can be proud of.

Mail fraud is so far outside what you expect to see in a cultivation story that the idea entertains me greatly, but you're correct about the impact. My intent with this chapter was for Rick to have a miniature arc where his anger drains away and he just wants to fix the problems as much as possible. If the story extends far enough, Rick will eventually get into more serious ethical issues.

"Judging from the spoon and syringe on the table, he'd used the money to buy crack." ---> It's possible to shoot crack but when I think I shooting drugs, I think of heroin.

I like the little detail there about the figurines. Even the simple knick-knacks are famous cultivators. (Though the image in my head is little porcelain shepherdesses, with the faces of stereotypical long-bearded Asian philosopher-like guys.) And further proof for my theory that if humans exist, one of them will invent cocaine. An odd thing to have as a universal constant, but that's humans for you.

sarahlin

That's fair, but I feel like his family is more crack than heroin. If they go to harder drugs, it's probably meth.

sarahlin

I enjoy details like that, so I'm glad they're appreciated. ^-^ >And further proof for my theory that if humans exist, one of them will invent cocaine. An odd thing to have as a universal constant, but that's humans for you. Humans really like mind-altering substances, so I'd bet it's a constant so long as the necessary ingredients exist.

Perhaps substitute a crack pipe and steel wool for the spoon and syringe? Smoking crack is much more common then injecting crack.
