Similar to how the BTS song ON is a reversal of their 2013 single NO, the 2019 single Boy WITH Luv parallels their 2014 single Boy IN Luv. Boy With Luv and ON are both part of the Map of the Soul album series, which looks back at BTS' past to explore how they have grown into who they are now. The title “Map of the Soul” comes from a book of the same name by Dr. Murray Stein, which explores Carl Jung’s psychological theories of the Self. Boy With Luv is from the album Map of the Soul: Persona, the first of two albums in the Map of the Soul series. The persona represents the part of the self that is presented to others - their public image. This is likely why the Boy With Luv music video has so many performance-related images and themes, such as the theater named Persona and visual references to the movie Singing in the Rain. This represents the general public perception of BTS as of 2019 - those who were once just ordinary boys from outside the city (portrayed in casual clothes in a diner in the music video) who have become charming global stars (represented by the theater and the cheering crowds). However, despite their growing success, the song expresses that BTS do not want to become distant from fans by being stuck up on some pedestal. They want to remain close to fans, appreciating and discovering the little details of each individual who lifted them up to where they are now. In fact, the Korean title of Boy With Luv translates to “A Poem for Little Things.” And as RM’s verse says while referencing Greek mythology, “With the wings of Icarus you gave me, not to the sun, but to you, let me fly.” By contrast, their 2014 song Boy in Luv expressed with dark and angsty tones the anxieties of young men who were obsessed with trying to appear manly to impress the girl they liked. The more mature Boy With Luv is a gentle, pastel-colored expression of wanting to step down from posturing to become level with others and exchange sincere love on more equal terms.
