I'm slightly confused if this is to get your diploma from college or to get some certification to work at a college. Either way, I'm super excited.

That's exactly how it works. Sims will need to have a college degree and pass a certification exam (50 % chance they fail or 50 % chance they pass) to move forward in the field.
