German Luftstrudel Pilot (1917) One of the most critical elements of WWI German air defense were the daring, initially nimble pilots of the Luftstrudel. These courageous women put their figures on the line to keep the German skies free of fattening desserts, under near constant bombardment from a rain of French crepes and pastries. Their forces suffered a high rate of attrition as the war dragged on, with many pilots rendered too heavy for the planes to lift after only a few months of active duty. The young woman pictured here, a veteran dogfighter, was later permanently grounded after a barrage of light, flaky cream puffs hit her in the thighs and abdomen. For these daring soldiers, patriotic muffin tops (known as 'Kaiser rolls') were a point of pride, a sentiment echoed by their French and British opponents. The two groups rarely met in battle, as Entente airwomen were typically engaged in their own defensive actions against the pizza bombardments of the Red Baron. Source: Ken Burns' "Fat Chicks"
