The community has decided! One of the most striking lesson voting results ever: a lot of you voted for a Paganini etude for maximum picking progress. I'm happy to deliver in the form of 'Moto Perpetuo', an extremely challenging but fun piece when it comes to alternate picking and switching between the different strings :)

I recorded video play-alongs in different tempos once again: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/hgzbl8j6gvbydh6/AABhLBJuF-fhYZpaRTczcYmPa?dl=0

Hope you have a lot of fun working on this my friends!

Why This CRAZY Paganini Exercise Is So HARD! (Try At Own Risk...)

Today we check out a crazy Paganini alternate picking exercise in the form of his famous composition 'Moto Perpetuo'! Download the tabs, guitar pro files, and video play-along files here: http://www.patreon.com/bernth The way that the down- and upstrokes are placed here is really challenging and that's what makes this technique exercise so powerful. We usually tend to place our picking strokes in a very guitarist-friendly way when we are shredding - right here, we often have to switch between the different strings in unexpected positions in each measure. Love this looks easy but there’s a few challenges in it thanks 😁👍

what kind of picks do you use?

bernth

Definitely harder than it looks, that's true - also surprised me when I was practicing for the video! :)

Great question Justin! I use the Dunlop Max-Grip Jazz III Carbon Fiber 1,38mm picks for quite a while now and they work great for me - the extra grip is perfect for the stage (sweaty hands) and the small size allows me to have the most amount of control over the motion!

I'm loving this exercise! The classical musician in me feels free again ^_^ I'm having a lot of trouble with the alternate picking on the arpeggios and haven't been able to get past 90ish: It's been a tempo wall I've been stuck at for a while now. Any suggestions?

bernth

Thanks for sharing that Matt, happy that you like it :) This one is difficult to speed up because of the string transitioning - it always helps me to keep the motion as small as possible (so that no other strings are touched by the pick) and to stay relaxed with my arm, at slower tempos, it's really tempting to use more force for the motion but that will make it difficult to perform it faster! I'd suggest checking out some speed exercises we looked at so far, these will help with the technique in general :)

Great exercise! I was not expecting it to be so hard on the pinky finger. That one definitely got the most work out from this!

Great Work Bernth!

Hey Bernth, I am working on my picking technique like there is no tomorrow. But I have this problem. only now after paying attention to it, i noticed my picking motion is not straight but more circular if you know what i mean... like diving between the strings and pulling back up to escape between the strings. At lower speeds this feels very natural to me, and i'm very accurate but it feels like this is the one and only thing holding me back to achieve clean higher speeds. Should i keep practicing the way i'm doing it, or should I start from scratch and learn myself how to hold a pick again? i'm a bit worried i might learn things the wrong way and keep adding mistakes ontop of mistakes. I am experimenting with holding my pinky onto the body of the guitar to keep my stability and when i do that i can achieve high speeds but only on 1 string, so i cannot use this technique to transition between strings without screwing up.... I am a bit lost at the moment.
