Hello to all my SGC members, I'm happy to share another early access lesson with you :) This one will go online tomorrow, as always I transcribed everything for you and attached the Guitar Pro files, PDF sheets and practice backing tracks.

This time we check out 2 of the most important exercises concerning a clean and efficient left hand technique, hope you have fun practicing! Make sure to include them in your practice routine from now on, the basic workout seems pretty easy but it does serve small wonders for my students that struggle with the angle of the left hand or the blocking of different strings.

Have a great weekend my friends!

Great, I just realized my left hand pinky finger is crocked :D

And I'm back 🤘🏼 got my PayPal sorted out, loving 10 Steps to Modern Shredding and I have officially adopted you as my sensei. There are actually a few really good teachers I've been following but I'm focusing solely on your teachings now...

Great exercise, simple but very effective.

hi bernth. started with the spider exercise right away and i noticed that in order to reach a clear tone with my pinky on the low E i have to really bend my wrist. today it's hurting somewhat. do you think it is because of lack of strength and i will ultimately need to bend less once i practice? i watch your video (and even the thumbnail above) and your wrist is almost straight! i don't think my neck is that much wider than yours (i have a les paul jr) and my hands are a normal size too...

bernth

Hey Marco, please make sure not to injure yourself - whenever you feel any pain or burning sensation it's time to stop, there is probably something wrong with the technique and you don't want to risk getting tendonitis or anything like that! So please consult with a doctor/specialist if you feel anything like that! You can always send me video footage via email to get some more precise feedback on your technique :) Yes, the wrist/hand has to be at this angle to develop a clean technique, you will have problems with any kind of stretching (like the wrist pain you might experience at the moment) if you angle your hand to the left or right. This is a mistake I made for a long time in the beginning and it really hurt my progress, that's why I recommend working with this exercise from the beginning :)

This is awesome, I like the second chromatic jazzy one, also the fact you have backing tracks. I tried a few earlier lessons last night, I was wondering if you are ever going to put backing tracks to them also?

bernth

Thanks a lot for sharing that! I sadly can't find the time to add extra files to older lessons on here since I'm constantly working on new material - we're getting close to 100 lessons on here and 1-2 are added every single week :) So I think that's a lot of material and at one point, I always added the tabs, guitar pro files and backing tracks due to popular demand (it was the idea of the Patreon community actually, very grateful for the constant awesome input) - hope that helps!

hi bernt, as a new member and trynig to get into the hobby again, I started practicing the spider exercice to get rid of my bad habits. At first, it was really hard to maintain the pressure on the fingers while going into the lower string, but grinding it i slowly getting it to work. But I just wonder if it is a kind of exercice that you need to be able to play faster or playing at the same tempo as in your video is ok ?

bernth

Thanks so much for your comment! Great to hear that you are getting back to practicing more, you won't regret it :) This exercise is definitely not about speed, you can play it a bit faster once you are comfortable with it - but pushing it to very high tempos is not a practice goal here, you just want to work on your left-hand technique effectively :)

I really would love for these lesson to be avaible as a link like some of the others are. As I am following these lesson with a mac computer and I can't run the video clips

It's always beneficial to be able to play anything faster cleanly. I think it would be plenty ok just to match his tempo but the choice is yours. I think it would be extremely difficult but not impossible so why not try? You can never go wrong with trying.

Phew... little question... is it a common thing that your left hand especially around the thumb region is really kind of hurting while starting with this exercise? It mostly happens on the lower strings... so low e downwards... when I try to positioning my pinky that way it doesn't block the upcoming a string. Maybe it is just a sort of pain coming from stretching due to this unusual position but I worry training the wrong position here for my physique... So... does anyone have similar problems here...?

Anonymous

Not exactly the same, but my thumb tend to move itself pointing to the neck of the guitar. This of course prevents proper movements, so I'm working really hard to prevent that - and - the curse of the flying pinky. :) Did your pain pass or is it still a problem?

Anonymous

Hi... phew... hard to find the post to which someone replied on patreon cause the email informing you doesn't provide a link or even the topic... I would say the pain is indeed nearly gone now. I can't tell how long it took but it is gone for quite some time now for sure since I nearly can't remember having this pain at all. BUT if playing this exercises or even chords for a while on the lower fretboard positions my thumb is still hurting. But that is one of my problems ever since... can't figure out why this is. I doubt it has to do with not having enough relaxation of my hand and muscles since I feel like I AM relaxed in that department...

what fret does the challenging exercise start on its very hard to pick where you start

bernth

You can download both PDF tabs and guitar pro files for the exact notation of each lesson on the platform! The files are directly below each post :) Hope that helps!

I have extended the exercise to play the spider walk all over the fretboard, starting at the first fret and continuing as high as I can. I noticed that I was keeping my elbow close to my torso when playing the 1st frets, forcing my hand in an angle. It's probably a habit formed from playing in small environments in my case. If I play it slow at first, I should really pay attention if my hand, arm and fingers are in the correct position and angle, every time I switch to a new fret position.

I started this 9 days ago, Finger Exercise 1, I started using 1/8 notes at 60BPM. It was difficult getting independent control of my ring finger and pinky finger but kept working through it 10 to 15 minutes per day, today (Day 9) I reached 144BPM (1/8 notes)...I'll probably go until Day 14 and then switch over to the more complex exercise #2.

How is a guitarist supposed to do the walk down exercise?! Haha sorry I had just never done it like this and have found that I have a LOT of work to do 😂
