In a recent publication the medieval practice of 1st and 2nd sleep was discussed. Was this a natural response to bodily demands or was it developed out of habit to waking for prayer. There is the suggestion that the period between 1st and 2nd sleep was the best time to have sex. I wonder about this.

My question about the Middle Ages would be how many languages were there, were translators used a lot, was Latin the main go to 'common language' for most of the world, as English is today, and is there an approximation of how many actual books, manuscripts and scrolls that have survived to date. Finally, have they all been translated? Can they be seen online, if so, where? Is it worth it to me to learn Ye Olde English, Medieval Latin, Celtic/Ancient Celtic, Welsh and/or other medieval languages? I do have a lot of questions about Medieval Times, for some reason, it never ceases to fascinate me. Tactics, weapons, romance, stories, cultures, travel, innovations, everyday life, etc. I ♥ your e-mag, Peter, and was happy to see that I could support you this way.

Thanks so much or the message. I don't think anyone has ever tried to count the number of medieval texts and manuscripts are out there, but it would be the millions or tens of millions. The British Library states that they hold "approximately 9,000 manuscripts in Latin, Greek, and European vernacular languages with decoration or illumination of some kind." That doesn't include all the ones that don' come up with decoration or illumination, and I think that number might be even higher. I also think that only a tiny fraction of medieval texts have been translated, but every year I come across dozens of new editions and translations. If you just read works in English translation you wouldn't run out :)
