oh rudeus...

Slavery still exists today and has for pretty much all of human history. He has to live in that world as the people who live there do. When dropped into a world with different rules and social structures you have to assimilate to survive. If you traveled back in time and tried to explain modern views on slavery to the tribe leaders in Africa who enslaved the weaker tribes they conquered, what do you think the outcome would be? Would they say "yeah your right" and free their slaves or kill you on the spot? Rudy obviously didn't LOVE being there but what else can he do in that world. He did the best thing he could think of, save one little girl. I haven't read the manga but maybe he helps stop all the slavery in that world in the end and this was his first step. Would that redeem him in your eyes or would you still harbor resentment for that one time when he was a teenager where he participated in an evil that was seen as acceptable at that time? From the way our society is now I would venture to say lots would never forgive anything someone does in their past no matter the later good they do. We see it in social media every day now. Way too much moral grandstanding these days where they conveniently ignore the context of the situations. They should just be happy they live in this very exact time period and culture. Most of them wouldn't make in any other time period in history and a ton of other places in the world even today.

I believe the author was explaining that a lot of the material had to be cut cause it was too much so there was a lot of stuff missing before he bought Juliette. I just can’t remember what it was exactly that was cut since I didn’t read the manga

I love this anime and the Light Novel. and I watch different reactors to see different reactions. I truly Love and Respect your Opinions and Reactions. It’s nice to see y’all break down on aspects of this show. The things Rudy does is definitely Creepy, I don’t hate him, what I like about him is that he is a flawed character.

So to echo what some others are saying, it is not about Rudeus being a likeable character or not. It is that he is a believable, flawed (fictional) human being. We already have are Gokus, Dekus, Tanjiros, Narutos, Ichigos, Luffys, etc etc... And while I like those(always do the right thing) characters too, I like this character as well BECAUSE he is severely flawed. Even when Rudeus was casually explaining groping the beast girls, you can see that he still has a social disconnect with the world. Also Steph I really have to say that I like and appreciate your more objective approach to reacting to this show now as opposed to the start of last season. As I mentioned before, this isn't the type of show to apply real world 20th century + beliefs and morals. Slavery exists, flawed people exist, immoral people exist. It is supposed to make you uncomfortable at times. Unlike shows like Slime, Overlord, Shield Hero(which started off good but dropped the ball in S2), I think Mushoku has the best character development, best music, best story writing, most believable and immersive world and with actual consequences. Lastly Steph said something about how Rudy should get over all the things that happened to him over a decade ago. We all know that IRL people are scarred for life from some of the traumatic stuff they go through as kids ONE time. (*Beating a dead horse. lol)This dude was beaten, bullied and abused for his entire life until he died. I don't think it is that easy. Just my opinion. Great reaction and discussion.

I guess it's a little much but I've seen a lot worse than other anime

Konosuba the female knight has a similar personality but it's laughed at and seen as enjoyable. Idk 😐

Rudy is very likable because he’s flawed and he’s constantly trying to improve himself but he also regresses every now and then which is completely realistic. He’s a realistic written character. And people like that authentic feel. Also MANY people can differentiate reality from fiction and can distance themselves from this fantasy show when those specific moments happen to get a little too uncomfortable. But yeah I understand how some people can’t handle the dark and raw subjects this anime presents.
