Yes, this did deviate from the game story material, Bill is in the game and Joel and Ellie do see him and interact with him. However, this iteration was beautiful, and I think eventually when you do play the Last of Us video game you will appreciate its story probably just as much as the tv show and be proud to experience two different but similar iterations of the Last of Us.

yeah in both version going to that area is how you end up with a truck but the interactions with bill are different so thats probably while mel recognized it

I think they had just missed them by a few days or maybe a week? If you remember, at the end of the first episode they played an 80s song on the radio so that may have been the day that they passed.

Bill wrote the letter on August 29,2023. Since the 80's music(Danger) is set to play automatically about a few weeks if not reset, and we see in the end of the first episode the radio goes off; it is safe to say that Bill and Frank have been dead for about a Month to a Month and a half -at most. The dinner they had was still moldy and not fully decayed, so it couldn't have been that long
