Beth and Matt sit down for the first episode of a new podcast called The Christerion Collection, a show where a recovering Catholic (Matt) and an ex-episcopalian (Beth) take a dive into the ever-growing ocean of religious movies to see what they can learn about this foreign yet familiar kind of art. In this episode, they watch God's Not Dead (2014), one of the standard-bearers for modern-day Christian cinema.

So hyped for this!

As an Exmo, I am LIVING for this! At some point u gotta watch some of the wacky ass shit the mormon church has put out. Maybe meet the mormons or once I was a beehive.

Anonymous

Would listen to soo many more of these episodes if you make more!!

Zac Childs

I didn't know how much I needed to hear sane takes on this movie. Almost everyone I grew up with are the kind of people who love these movies. I love my family and they're all wonderful people, but I've always had to just shut up and pretend these movies are good to avoid having a lecture about my faith from my grandparents. I can't wait for more of these.

JD Heisey

This was so fucking good and I need more. I would pay an amount of money entirely separate from what I pay from this patreon to hear you guys talk more about this kind of movie. Such a phenomenal podcast idea and I cannot wait for more 🔥🔥🔥

Caden Stovall

As a pastors kid this movie caused a freaking ruckus when it came out. I think my family watched it opening week

Josh & Nanni Westgate

Oh my God, please please please do Carraige us next absolute shit show of a movie

Atticus0w0

Love this! One of my favorite childhood memories involved this movie, because while watching this movie I found out I was allergic to pecans! God may not have been dead, but I for sure was. Can’t wait for more fun content like this!!

Anonymous

This is absolutely amazing! I would love to see further episodes of this!

Anonymous

Omg I was shown this movie in school! I can't wait to be healed 😔

Andrew

Beth is really channeling Sarah Marshall with this and I love that for her

Anonymous

This was so good!!

Oskar Schmerschneider

Absolutely love the discussion around this film. Me and my friends used to watch it a lot on weed back in the day to make fun people christians but I've been looking for a better discussion on its flawed logic. Also Matt and Beth are a great combo

Anonymous

Love it

Anonymous

Anybody else remember The Ride? The one from 97 about bull riding and Jesus!

Anonymous

I grew up religious but left when I was in 8th, I could always tell when my friends from my old church were watching the movie cuz I'd get like 12 texts saying "God's Not Dead" they'd watch it like every other week 😭

Brett Owen

When this movie came out my youth group in church wanted to do a big lesson/watch party for it. They recreated the movie poster on a whiteboard, so black text for god, red for not, and black again for dead. BUT, they also wanted to have the showing be like a theater and set up some dramatic red lighting. so a bunch of teens walk into a dark red room with the words GODS DEAD bc the red light makes it hard to see the not. Irrelevant to the actual discussion here but it’s like the only fun I had relating to this film

Josh Mangan

This was really resonant with me as someone brought up conservative baptist. Really love how y'all address what's messed up while also examining why the movie works for a large audience.

Anonymous

Super excited for this, hope you guys make more episodes. I remember being in high school feeling really grossed out when my cousin made me watch this movie with him, even though I took my christianity really seriously. It's interesting to hear you guys who actually know about filmmaking give language to some of the issues I had with it.

Justthingstbh

This was great, loved the energy between Matt and Beth

Michael Kurowski

I could listen to 8 more hours of this. As someone with no philosophy ed, I’d love a deep dive

Anonymous

Love this! I used to be super religious, so hearing this and hearing y’all discussion is very fascinating and therapeutic at the same time

Anonymous

It's so weird coming from wendigoon talking about the story of faith and listening to this.

Anonymous

Yes more yes

Glenn

The "lapsed religious person grapples with the weird culture they grew up in" genre began for me with the "Good Christian Fun" podcast, and I am delighted to hear more of it from people I already know are funny.

Jason

I LOVED this. I’m from a Catholic family but also went to non-denominational churches throughout my teen years, so this hits hard.

Check out “God Awful Movies” if you like this content

brb going to pray for an "Angels in the Outfield" episode.

As someone who grew up without any religion this is extremely insightful and interesting

Levi Jo

I have interesting thoughts on “morals with/without God”. As a current Christian who is nowhere near conservative.

Sheila-la-la-la

Beth was right. Should have been Cruciflix 😂 Would totally subscribe to this podcast

Colleen

Wow loved this sm y’all! Your conversation was lighthearted and funny but also brought up some really great points about religion and religious people. Can’t wait for more!

Anonymous

As a philosophy graduate student, this conversation was simply splendid. Glad to hear us philosophers are so accurately displayed in media as tyrannical atheists, lol. Gotta say, christians love to misunderstand the Nietzschean "God's Not Dead" passage.

Vivien Ling

grew up in an evangelical-adjacent cult and I'm so here for a new religious trauma comedy podcast

Anonymous

Please. Do. Veggie. Tales.

Ellen H.

Also came to the comments to politely demand Veggie Tales please! They were the basis of my catholic childhood 🍅🎶

Anonymous

I was still a Christian kid when I watched this movie and I swear it started me on a road to questioning and eventually to non-Christianity. The Christian characters were so unlikeable and the non Christians were betrayed as evil monsters. It made my brain do a factory reset.

logan jilek

This is very good and I would listen to this series

Mark Smith

My dad was a Southern Baptist preacher when I was growing up. American Family Radio was in charge of our lives. Their headquarters were about an hour down the road, too. Tupelo, Mississippi. They did the Disney boycott until Chronicles of Narnia came out then bam it dropped. But yeah Veggie Tales, Magee and Me, Buttercream Gang -I think-, Gospel Bill, tons of Christian shows and movies.

Alexander Eby

This is incredible! More please!

Kelton Hollister

I’m so obsessed with this podcast and I know a lot of other folks who would be so into this. So thoughtful and interesting. PLEASE continue with this podcast, and expand it!!

Doyle Just Doyle

Need a Christerion Collection mainfeed ASAP, then a Cruciflix Patreon.

Loved this, hope you keep it going!

This is absolutely a hit, definitely want more. Check out the popes exorcist, they straight up blame the inquisition on the devil which is a wild stand point and would love to hear yalls perspective

This was really interesting to listen to, I’d love if y’all did more with this concept!

Angels in the Outfield! Oh wow, haven't thought about that film in a while, but now that y'all mention it, I do remember seeing the trailer for it every time I watched the VHS copy of The Lion King.

Chris’s Secret 3rd Ball

Haven’t even watched yet but I’m requesting a minimum of 10 more episodes

This was SO GOOD! Hope this becomes regular/would listen to film analysis about any genre

Reminds me of the stories my sisters had going to a bible camp and being told that our cousin was going to hell by one of the camp counsellors cause he wasn’t baptized

Anonymous

Please do more episodes!!! You guys could watch Miracles from Heaven or War Room :) also I would die for a veggie tales episode

Podcast itself was great, but i gotta appreciate how Christerion Collection night genuinely be my favorite podcast name of all time

Cass

Please let this be its own podcast!!!

Doot Doot

This is an awesome podcast! I would definitely listen to all of these

Morti Mushy

Lol reading the comments have me slightly concerned so I’ll be the one Nondenominational Christian to say I saw the movie when it came out and I honestly didn’t really remember much. All I really remember was that in reality the specific premise of Christian students forced to do stuff like that? It’s a lot worse than just writing the words “God is dead”. I agree all Christian’s need to question their faith and really dig deep in theology on their own but the anti Christian theme on collage campus is actually insane. Gods not dead two, teacher sued for answering a question about Jesus. Yes it happens and coming from a family of Christian teachers it’s honestly terrifying how much you have to tip toe. Idk just my perspective since everyone else wanted to go down the Christian’s are bigots train 😅 But a movie I found much more interesting than Gods Not Dead was a case for Christ. From what I remember it was in the perspective of an atheist journalist trying to insist to his wife, who is Christian, that she’s wrong. I found his journey quite interesting in of itself and it’s a true story.

CopperKnight

I was in a Catholic highschool when this came out. Im 90% sure we took a field trip to watch this movie. I hated it.

Mort

Pleassseee make more of these!! I Was raised in fundamentalist baptist household, listening to people break down why the movies I was forced to watch made me feel so gross is super refreshing and you both are amazingly funny and insightful💕🩵

Anonymous

Christian here, one could even say I lean conservatively. While i disagree on some points made overall this was great. Maybe a suggestion is to have a current Christian on in order to address the issue of potentially creating a strawman yourselves.

jen Rogue

Love this pod. Growing up the only big Christian movie I would watch was The prince of Egypt. I also some what reminded vegie tales because of the songs

Lienisaur

Christians collecting humans like kids collect Pokémon. "Gotta Convert Them All, Jesus Christ!"

I love Evolution stick but it has pokemon on it

Long time listener, first time caller (commenter lol) and dedicated Catholic who loves the church. Interesting podcast. I've been a fan of Freddy/Matt and the crew for a long time (VGHS, RocketJump the Show, Story Break and now D&Dads). I think it's interesting that they would even attempt this podcast, why they feel it something they need to explore. When you listen for a long time they like to poke fun and laugh at Christians from time to time (just made a Catholic Priest joke last episode) I cringe and then just turn a blind eye and keep listening and enjoying the content, becaue I dont think they understand what they're doing when they say those things or make those jokes. I think they're all genuinely super nice talented funny people. However you can clearly see whenever they make these jokes and poke fun at Christians/Catholics/Jesus they quicky search for or provide an over-the-top laugh or seek validation from one of the other co-hosts. I sense a real fragility, yet an interest in the faith. Certainly enough interest to take it a step farther and launch this podcast. I like to think Catholics and Christians are on the same side, but when it comes to these type of movies I see the differences. Christian cinema for the most part is terrible. Terrible acting, scripts, low budgets and over-the-top cheesiness. I saw this movie when it come out, I remember enjoying it, enjoying the themes of it, the music and Kevin Sorbo actually did a great job acting. I did not text 100 people after lol. I could like it while also not totally buy into all the concepts. I do believe that up until the last minute of your death you can be saved, so I'm fine with that theme of "it's never too late" thats 100% true. They way they went about it is extreme and unlikely. I'll continue to listen, not so much because I care about the movies but I enjoy getting the personal tidbits and anecdotes and what happened to them in their faith journey and what they believe now and why. To Matt's credit he speaks extrememly honestly about the good and bad experience he had growing up Catholic and going to Catholic school and doesn't just say bad things, he also says some good things and talks about good people he met along the way. I think there is a reason that science fiction, fantasy, video games, etc. are so popular in our culture. I believe we are created by God, we have a soul, that there is a heaven and a hell and angels and saints and demons. That's pretty wild stuff! And it's REAL and we are a part of it. We all play a role. So it's not surprising to me that such a large protion of our population are drawn to the fantasy and adventure genre because deep down in our souls we are all called to it. Part of me is hoping that Matt and Beth, and the whole D&Dad crew, which like I said is made up of awesome, kind, talented individuals can find there way to or back to the Church.

Anonymous

I love the pod overall, while you both may have christian backgrounds, it's lacking christian nuance Overlooking basic christian concepts with certain topics. I hope you invite poeple from the religion you wish to discuss Otherwise if can be rather distasteful. Scrolling through this comment section it greatly leans to those who dislike religion which means you're leaning off neutrality.

maddo

I just graduated w a BA in philosophy and iv been saying FOR YEARS philosophy is nearly inextricable from religion/god. THANK YOU MATT.

Anonymous

Love it!

Anonymous

highly recommend the movie soul surfer which blames the girl who got her arm bit off by a shark, on her skipping a mission trip LMAO

Anonymous

Just gotta say, as a born and raised Baptist (who somehow managed to keep his faith) I 100% get Matt's anger about the dogmatic BS. But like they said, there's still plenty of reasonable, even smart, religious people out there if you really look.

Josiah Muskrat

This is actually great, and really therapeutic. PLEASE DO MORE

Anonymous

OMG, I absolutely loved this! So much fun, really loved the vibe! Beth's summary was really concise and I loved how the critique wasn't just "Christians are dumb," but really picked apart the messed up bits and wildness of the movie. I had a high school friend who was very into the Newsboys, quite the flashback lol

Anonymous

Everyone should watch "Assassination A.D." An outrageous religious movie that is also anti Muslim and deals with time travel. I recommend it because it is very serious about its message but comes across like parody. A poor synopsis - College students get recruited by a Muslim millionaire to build him a time machine. Sub plots include - 2 of the main college kids have a love plot, time travel with different outcomes i.e. multiverse and paradox plus paradox correction, Jesus downloading English from God to speak with one of the college students, a B plot that deals with a contracted security guy whose family dies at the beginning but gets a happy ending, Muslim mercenaries gunning down Roman soldiers and at one point Jesus, and one of the most ridiculous uses of the word jihad I have ever seen. Its a movie that is so bad, it becomes funny. I hope this makes you want to watch it and discuss.

Anonymous

Just wanted to second all of the other comments - absolutely loved this. Thanks Beth and Matt!

Michael Nixon

Heads up if you're gonna hop on the ASSASSIN 33 AD train, and you truly should: DO NOT get the director's newer cut (renamed "Black Easter"). Just... trust me.

As a Bible belt catholic that went to an evangelical primary school and did a month in a cambridge intro philosophy course, I straight up scored an almost perfect score in contradictory beliefs. I've been thoroughly schooled in most popular pro-theological arguments. Almost none of them hold water or remain sound under scrutiny. End of the day, this is just repeating dogma and acting like that is enough to base a life on. Its also about reinforcing the smugness and in group, the movie is not in good faith trying to teach anyone anything. All that to say, thanks for doing this series I love it!

Anonymous

Please, please, please, please, please, please, PLEASE keep this going!

Idk if Matt and Beth read these comments but if anyone else is curious, here's an answer to Matt's question about the "morality proves God is real" argument. A lot of Christians do try to argue what Matt said, that you can't be a moral person without Jesus. And that is nonsense, for the reasons Matt gave. But the actual argument in Christian apologetics is not that you can't be a moral person without God; it's that the existence of morality at all is evidence of a moral creator. It fully agrees with Matt that you don't need to be Christian to be a good person, and that you don't need religion to know right from wrong. But it continues with "If everyone is instilled with an innate sense of morality, where did that come from?" There's more to it than that, but it basically uses that line of reasoning to conclude that it could only come from a good, moral god. Also, I'm not trying to be a Well Actually, I just genuinely find this stuff fascinating and thought other people might too! I loved this episode and really hope we get more!

Anonymous

I can't wait to share this with my exvangelical friends!

I have been really deep diving into deconstruction content and what the heck is up with America's brand of evangelicalism and this crazy right shift. I loved the dynamic or Beth and Matt. I am so excited to hear more! This was fun. Thanks!

This is awesome content, and it's nice to hear from some other people who were former Christians on the topic of Christian entertainment since I am also a former Christian! I would love to hear more from Bet and Matt and hope this becomes a full podcast running alongside dungeons and daddies!!

This was amazing and I hope we get a full spinoff podcast of this content!

Kendall Crosby

Omg I absolutely love this. Please don't stop making these. And I can't believe y'all didn't discuss the fact that Kevin spent his whole career destroying people's faith in God but it's a good thing he got to repent before he died so he can go to heaven 🤣 deep south here and took a long time take that last step as an agnostic atheist

Jess Houwen

Y'all did way better with that than I would have. As a Christian, Christian movies make me want to throw things through walls.

Bishini

My cousin thought I was going to hell because I was Catholic and forced me to watch this movie with him. All I remember is the insane ending. Everything else was repressed lol Thank you for your fun analysis! I’m so stoked for more of these 😁❤️

Off topic but did anyone ever have to watch the Christian movie "to save a life" about this kid who committed suicide after shooting up a school? And it's this other kid trying to like grapple with why someone would do that? My youth pastor made me watch it after my ex boyfriend committed suicide...not a great time.

Lindsey Decker

I enjoyed this ep on so many levels -- as a fan of Beth and Matt, as a film buff, and as an atheist who grew up in a small and super, super, really ridiculously intensely fundamentalist Christian town.

I loved hearing Matt and Beth talk about the film and can't wait for them to do more.

As a reformed Pentecostal I am HERE for this. I revisited my memories of this movie in the worst possible way, 10/10 would recommend. I hope they will do more of these, I'd love to hear their take on Fireproof and its absolutely insane idea of "healthy" relationships

Anonymous

Wild! Loved this! My nephews watch some very 'interesting' Christian shows and I feel like I have to deprogram them sometimes.

Alyssa

As someone who still is of the faith - I’ll admit that I was a little nervous about this ep. But honestly, I really enjoyed it! It’s good to hear an objective breakdown of why it’s a bad movie based on writing and storytelling techniques, instead of just bashing on the faith and religious aspect of the movie. I really appreciated how respectful and thought-provoking this episode was! Can’t wait to hear more!

Please have more of these! Matt, Beth, you are incredible!

This was actually hilarious. I watched this movie when I was in high school youth group and this podcast is so fuckin accurate but my little brain at the time was like wow, this movie is so good 🤣🤣

Anonymous

Working my way through the patreon content and was a little hesitant on this one. It was AMAZING! Please do more of these!

Jed

Christian here, it drives me absolutely bonkers when “Christian media” settles for one-dimensional, offensively stereotypical portrayals of differing beliefs. It’s like they think that these portrayals of atheists, liberals, muslims…are going to draw people to the faith when it is more repulsive than anything else. I would be described as a right-leaning Christian Libertarian. In my opinion it’s not the job of Christianity to utilize the power of government to enforce our moral values into society.

Estrogenerator

Are we not gonna talk about how there are THREE SEQUELS to God's Not Dead?? What a franchise!

Widget

this was incredibly healing for me to listen to this. I grew up going to a christian school and a very intense legalistic baptist church. The healing for me has been slow and steady but this was great to hear someone’s take outside of the church on this film. I remember seeing it in theaters and it blows my mind to see it now realizing how it’s just literal propaganda. love you guys thank you can’t wait for more ❤️

Katilynn Morgan

Beth bringing up that she tried to go to youth group as a kid/ teen and feeling like she was an outsider hits so hard. I did the same thing as a kid, after being brought to a babysitter who was a DEVOUT Christian and used it like it was title that made her better than everyone else; She guilt tripped me (and subsequently my mother) in to going back to church. I, being a little goth/alt/whatever I was in the mid to late 00's, felt so isolated in a place that preached community. I stopped going, and never really talked about it, but it's a small comfort knowing I wasn't the only one. So thank you for that Beth.

Brian Whitfield

That was awesome. I’m here for a hundred more

Nick Schrock

I will say some of your points are valid but, when it comes to "anti-education" that is plain wrong, you will get the occasional crazy aunt but as a Christian it is extremely hard to raise a kid and find them a school that doesn't shove stuff that goes completely against what you belive down their throats. I was homeschooled and my parents are Christians and they didn't try to control or hide knowledge from me, they were and still are open to teach me anything and then explain what they think about it and then let me make my own decision. I would never let me kid go into public school right now, and I would have to prepare them alot for college.

Please make this a regular series 🙏

withinmyself

Great conversation. Both of my parents are retired ministers. I consider myself an agnostic who leans towards Christianity. My parents always talked about other religions. We had a copy of the Quran, books on Buddhism, atheism. My Dad was always the only pastor who would go out of his way to welcome everyone in his church and regularly married same sex couples. Not sure how this fits but my parents were big Rocky Horror Picture Show fans and I saw that movie at least 4 times before I was in High School. I have a lot to say about this topic but I mainly just wanted to say thank you for clarifying there are Christians who aren't part of the mainstream right. One last thing. I have a "friend" who is part of the extreme right and is a member of a southern baptist church. He regularly says "I'm so glad there is a hell" Not for any philosophical reason or even as an argument. Basically just when someone pisses him off. Like if a waiter forgets to put a lemon in his water. He's the worst. I need new friends. I like to think that there's a picture of him in his yearbook with his senior quote that just says "I'm glad there's a hell" I told my Dad about this and he said, well actually (hehe) Well actually, the bible never depicts hell as an actual place. That is a very secular invention that some sects of religion have taken and used as they see fit.
