Dad Discord Update! (Patreon)

Hey folks!

Let us kick this off by saying that our collective gourds are completely blown by all of your support - we blew past 1000 patrons faster than we could have imagined, and we’ve been encouraged by your kind words about the podcast, staggered by the wealth of incredible fan art you are posting, and mildly creeped out/aroused (a killer combo) by the explicit nsfw slash fiction you’re uh, pounding out on your keyboards.

As this podcast grows, we’ve been talking with folks who have insight into the needs and best practices of managing and interacting with a growing audience on a Patreon-linked Discord, and are implementing some changes on the Discord server.

First, the DAD Patreon Discord now has moderators! They'll be available under the moderator heading in the user list. These people have been picked based on previous experience (in other Discords, Patreon-linked Discords, and also with RocketJump’s various community offerings in the past) and have been empowered to help guide and monitor the discussions on the server. (Also, big thanks to everyone who applied when I called for volunteers!)

One of the challenges of a Patreon-linked Discord is the fact that access is linked to money. This makes the job of a moderator particularly difficult because many of the tools available to a moderator (such as kicking or banning from the server) become awkward to apply. Therefore, in situations where mods need to step in, we’ll be instituting a warning and muting system. Community infractions will result in a warning, and two warnings in a 24 hour period will temporarily mute your account. People who are muted will still be able to read messages, but will be unable to type or interact.

As the server continues to grow, the moderation approach we use will necessarily continue to evolve. Discord, being a real-time chat program, presents a unique set of challenges, and keeping the community cohesive is made easier for everyone by ensuring we all understand the rules of conduct.
