Hi Patreons!                         {PDFs edited 02/11/2021}

We are delighted that the Paint-By-Numbers Institute had shared its full educational pack with us, from Intro level through to Degree level PBN!

You have to download the first document "PBN 01 Intro to Japanese Sums", and if you can solve all the puzzles in it, you will be able to access PBN 02; the same process applies all the way through to degree level! If you can reach and achieve that level, send us the final password to qualify for a Cracking the Cryptic prize. Everyone at that level will get a diploma, but only one lucky winner (sent in by 4pm UK time on 20th November) will win a CTC prize.

Good luck - and thank you for being one of our Patreons!

In pack PBN 05, the puzzle Bow and Arrow is killing me. Any hints to get moving on this one?

Is it just me or is there a problem with the colouring in Dragon Slayer in pack 5. Row 5 determines there must be a blue 2 in row 8 since row 7 must be a red 1. Column 8 therefore must fill all 4 spots above it to fulfil the 19 clue and must be red, however the top row cannot contain a red, and by that logic you cannot make 19 in 3 cells as the final cell of each of those rows is limited to low digits.

In PBN 06 puzzle 4 the rules in Penpal say 'one "unshaded" cell has been identified for you'. I can't see it. Is this an oversight, and wasn't meant to be in the rules?

The 1 in column 7 is orange, the 2 is red, and the 19 clue can then be blue.

That's not the only missing clue: In pack 2, puzzle 1 "Keep the doctor away" there is an orange frame around cell R1C1, but there is no explanation whatsoever what that frame could mean. Then in pack 7, puzzle 1 (Nanana...), there is no mention of the antiknight rule - I had to open the puzzle in git.io and read the rules over there. Either an oversight by the authors or just an additional problem for me to solve?

Now I am stuck in pack 7, puzzle 2 (Find the Treasure). Apparently, the clues on top add to 372, whereas the clues at the left side add to 389. Where are the missing 17? Is that the treasure I have to find?

PBN 06 puzzle 6. "There is no need for unshadded cells between shadded regions." But where may be? or what?

How are we supposed to send in the final password? Is there a CTC email? I can't find it listed anywhere.

David, are you aware that two shaded areas of different colors may actually be adjacent? Therefore, the 1 in r5 does not need to be between the 18 and the 17! Hope that helps.

Got it! There are indeed a 12 and a 5 clue missing after 9, 11, 8 on top of column 7. And indeed, 12 and 5 do add up to the missing 17 mentioned above.

It's me again. I am struggling with a rule in PBN 07, puzzle 4 "Parrot in the Sky". The rule states "Between groups of shaded cells of the same color, there must be at least one unshaded cell." However, I think I found a run of four shaded areas without an unshaded cell between them. Given only three colors, there will be two groups with the same color with one or more cells of a different color between them, but WITHOUT an unshaded cell between them. That does clearly contradict the rule (which states that those like-colored groups MUST have an unshaded cell between them). What am I doing wrong?

Perhaps interpret 'at least one unshaded cell' as 'at least once cell not shaded that color'. Without spoiling it for others, you must have already used this interpretation for a puzzle in PBN 04.
