The next Reading Club will be on Corey Robin's Fear: The History of a Political Idea

This will be part of a sequence of two readings on the politics of fear. The recording date will be 6 April, a bit later than usual. Please do get your questions in by then.

In future, the RC recordings will generally fall on the last Wednesday of the month, so you can plan your reading and discussion accordingly.

Robin wants to replace fear with justice. Is that possible under conditions of scarcity? I think not. First we have to ride the developmental-state-capitalist train all the way to abundance, or close enough to it, globally.

Additionally - and this isn’t necessarily a criticism of the book per se - but I wanted a chapter on paranoia. I think he too quickly dismissed this as shittier Cold War liberal interpretations of McCarthy. Hofstrader is a shittier liberal. But paranoia is a real political emotion that falls under the heading “fear.”
