I wonder if Brazil's "insularity" regarding music consumption that Alex mentions contributes to it being less colonised by the American lens. I am also reminded of a quote I read once that said that if there was a World Cup of music, Brazil would be right up there, due to the sheer diversity for starters.

The claim about Brazil's musical insularity came as a surprise because a) so many Kpop/Jpop fans b) click on any 80's/90's alternative rock or metal video on YouTube and the comments will be full of Brazilians. I guess it's a reminder of just how many Brazilians there are. We love them.

210 million, >80% of the population is connected to the internet; among those, a high rate of social media usage; and a very 'communicative' culture. That explains why 'Brazil mentioned' etc is a meme.
