Mel was indeed at the Companions Meeting. She asked the question "How many Doctor's are there?" * The Celestial Toymaker is one of the infamous 'missing stories' from Hartnells era; so comparatively few people have actually seen it - although the final episode exists, and an officially animated version is due to be released next year, This episode was my favourite of the three,as it's the only one which is truly 'anniversary' in nature, and is absolutely full of verbal references to the shows history! *I had to go back and watch it just now, to confirm that.

Enjoyed seeing your reaction to this special. I hugely enjoyed this final special for the most part. Very intense, engaging, emotional and intriguing overall. The social commentary regarding social media and people always thinking their right was very direct but effective what with the public chaos scenes on the streets and the media and news reports displaying that mentality that they usually try to subdue. As Donna said, "No change there then!" To have the human race's worst attributes manipulated and amplified by an elemental god like the Toymaker made this even more engaging and crazy. Kate's reaction to Shirley when she was under influence mirrors a couple of people who reacted a similar way when watching Shirley cross her legs in The Star Beast which is kinda funny (I think RTD knew that some people who are unaware of the different The Doctor reuniting with the reformed UNIT was great too. The new tower definitely gave Avengers vibe. It was nice to see Kate and Shirley again. And Mel! I haven't met Mel in my Classic Who watch either but I'm very close to meeting her soon. I know she's the next companion that I will be meeting in my current watch. It's nice that she gets to have a bit of spotlight in meeting both The 14 and 15th Doctors as she missed out on meeting 13 as we only saw her in the companion meetings for Jodie's last episode, so it's cool to see that Kate has been recruiting some past companions and now Donna even gets a new job with UNIT which is lovely. It's also nice to see Kate's vulnerability with her hugging The Doctor and being more uncertain on what to do with the situation. The last time the Toymaker encountered The Doctor was 57 years ago with The First Doctor, Steven and Dodo. Because it's a missing story, I have no great recollection of it other than listening to the recons and watching the last episode which was the only surviving episode out of the missing ones. Safe to say that this episode definitely surpassed it with the Toymaker being played brilliantly by NPH. It's believed that the reason why he kept switching accents is due to RTD wanting to keep the racist aspect of the character. It was also shown a bit during the start where he was racist towards the Charles Banerjee guy. Also fun fact. The American newscast reader who was anti-zeedex is Trinity Wells. She commonly appeared as a news reporter during the first RTD era of Doctor Who where we would see her constantly report aliens invasions that happened in 9th and 10th Doctor's era of Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. It was nice to see her again even though now she's gone awol lmao. I really loved the moments with 14 catching up with Mel briefly, The Doctor giving that speech amount humanity and also giving Kate permission to take action as he's still the acting president and Donna's reaction to getting a job with UNIT thanks to Kate. Even Donna confessing to The Doctor that she did see his mind while she was TheDocorDonna. The last scene in The Wild Blue Yonder hinted that she may have been lying when The Doctor questioned her about this after what the fake Donna told him. It's nice to see the real Donna wanting to engage in that topic but of course, The Doctor continues to avoid the conversation as usual which was funny. I really loved the confrontation scene between The Doctor, Donna and The Toymaker in the shop. The build up to The Doctor realising who he was and the fact that he told Donna to go back to the Tardis for the first time really showcases how serious and threatening the Toymaker is, even much to Donna's surprise to hearing The Doctor tell her that. I also liked the small use of colourised classic who flashbacks in that moment which led to the Toymaker introducing himself. The music that plays in that moment is really good and effective. I like how the Toymaker's theme was a child choir sounding very dystopian and creepy. The scenes where they entered the Toymaker's domain were very effective. One of my other favourite moments was The Doctor breaking down and briefly losing his composure after he explained who the Toymaker was to Donna. "Take away the Tardis, sonic and toys, what am I?" Which alludes to him still questioning himself after the experiences he's been through with the flux and everything. He's even uncertain if he can protect Donna this time after his near blunder at the climax of Wild Blue Yonder where he originally picked the wrong Donna. And I love that Donna simply responds to him by saying "Maybe I'll save you" and gives him that extra reassurance by mentioning the advice that her dad gave her regarding games always starting from scratch. That was a really nice moment. The Doctor and Donna are so good together. The further exploration in the Toymaker's domain was also effective with the Toymaker making puppets of The Doctor and Charles while Donna had to fight off those creepy Scottish dolls. Very cryptic and chilling in places. And I also loved the puppet show scene with the Toymaker informing Donna about the fate of the companions that followed after her. Even though Amy, Clara and Bill had some silver linings with their exits, I like how the tragedy and traumatic nature of their deaths are still highlighted which really makes The Toymaker succeed in triggering The Doctor by saying "WELL THAT'S ALRIGHT THEN". As a way to combat The Doctor sugar-coating the tragedies as Amy still dies from a 2012 perspective, Clara is still taking the slow path to her death and Bill is no longer human. That line has already become meme material which is funny. The things that the Toymaker told The Doctor during the card game scenes was also interesting and it definitely feels like they're possibly setting up stuff for Ncuti's arc. I'm curious to know about "The one who waits" and The Meep from the starbeast episode previously saying "Wait till I tell the boss". I predict that they're somehow related but I guess we'll find out once we enter 15th Doctor's new era. Donna saying "I'M ALREADY RUNNING" as the domain collapsed was hilarious and The Spice Girls dance montage from the Toymaker was absolute gold. It's like John Simm's Voodoo Child, Can't Decide dances from Series 3 and Sacha Dawhan's Rasputin dance from Jodie's last episode all meshed into one which was funny but also scary with the way he made Kate and Mel fall while also killing UNIT soldiers in such a bizarrely comedic way which makes him that much threatening. Lots of good stuff in these moments. The bi-regeneration moment in the third and final act of the episode was very unexpected for most people who didn't read the leaks. It's definitely been controversial with some fans and I imagine it will evoke even further theories, debates and discussions surrounding its implications for the future. I'm currently in two minds about it where I liked some aspects of it such as 14 and 15 working together against the Toymaker. But I also still need to reflect on it as a whole. Because of The Doctor splitting into two, he ends up splitting clothes between 14 and 15 which is funny seeing 15 in his pants. My only criticism for this act is that I would have liked to re-explore the domain for a more intense game but the throwback to playing ball as it was the first game that they called back to makes sense for the most part. I just would have made it longer and more intense than it was (as I feel like it ended a bit too quickly) and also a bit of revisiting for the chaos aftermath with humanity. But other than that, it was a mostly solid episode. There's something genuinely comforting about 15 hugging 14 and kissing him on the forehead. It's funny how the 50th anniversary was about saving Gallifrey and now the 60th is about saving The Doctor himself. With how 10 and 11 helped comfort the War Doctor, it's nice to see 15 do the same with 14 here. 14 has been beating himself down in these last two specials so it makes that moment even comforting to see his future self comfort his previous incarnation with some needed self love which leads to the last few scenes. Don't worry! You're not the only one who got emotional too. 15 mentioning how him and 14 have never stopped running since the very start with some of the classic and new who references. And then mentioning the losses of certain characters like Sarah Jane, Rose and River really got to me. This is the first time that Sarah Jane's death has been acknowledged in the main show which really upsets me. Your reaction to the River and Sarah Jane mentions mirrored mine. But what got me tearing up was Donna agreeing with 15 and telling 14 that he needs to stop for recuperation. Donna telling 14 to take the slow path and telling him that he changed his face back to 10 and found her to come back home made me emotional especially with the look of 14 being lost for words like a lost puppy feeling overwhelmed with sadness and fear. Seeing him and Donna cry made me cry. The Last Christmas reprise music playing genuinely made it even more emotional. It reminds me of Sarah Jane telling the 10th Doctor in Journey's End that "You act like such a lonely man, but look at you! You've got the biggest family on earth!" and suddenly Sarah Jane's words hit different now that 14 is staying mostly earth-bound with Donna and her family. It does lead to questions as to how the 14th Doctor will cope with a mostly earth bound life even though he still has a Tardis to travel in and possibly what happens long after Donna and her family are gone or whether he will still be involved in helping in earth related dangers. It also evokes questions or theories on when he eventually ends up regenerating as 15 (by going back to the bi-regeneration moment through a possible bootstrap paradox) as 15 did say that they were doing rehab out of order hence why 15 feels very energetic and rejuvenated. Hopefully we get clarity on this even if we never see 14 or Donna again. I never expected Donna to get a happy ending with 14. We get another Tennant Doctor just like Rose did with the Metacrisis Doctor in Series 4. I was expecting something tragic to happen again but to see Donna keep her memories and remain alive with 14 staying with her as they endure the day to day life was very surprising and it makes me emotional. I know people will criticise this and compare it to their Series 4 ending which ended in tragedy but after 15 years, I'm actually contempt with this ending for now. It's been lovely having Donna back for these specials. Catherine Tate was amazing as always, giving some really powerful performances as Donna. We've really seen how she's adjusted to new life and it's lovely that she gets to have her best friend back to spend it with her. David Tennant has always been brilliant as The 10th Doctor and seeing him return as the 14th Doctor with the experiences of all the previous Doctors has been very interesting too. He's really been in touch with emotions in these three specials while still retaining that protective, brainy and dominant quality that I've always loved about him. The same but with certain maturity and reflection. It's been a pleasure to have them both back for this occasion. The 10th Doctor and Donna will always be my top favourite Doctor and companion duo. Definitely among my top favourite Doctor Who pairings. I love them so much and now I'm sad because I'm going to miss them all over again after having them back for these 3 specials. I'm already feeling the withdrawal symptoms. It's been a treat to have them back for the 60th. I had a fun ride with these specials too. Very fun and exhilarating. I'm looking forward to Ncuti Gatwa's new era as The 15th Doctor. He already brought some great energy in the last 15 minutes of this special and now I'm ready to see what his new era brings. His theme at the end sounds great too. Murray Gold returning to Doctor Who alongside RTD makes this feel like coming home again similar to what Donna said about 14 coming home to her. All of this is really comforting. Roll on Christmas! :)
