Quick poll for you fine patrons of the arts! It's been... a very long time since I've had anything approaching a forum, but it's hard to escape how popular Discord is, and it seems like a thing nearly every artist who's on Patreon has going. So, simple question I suppose: would YOU like to be part of a GarthFT Discord server?

Just join another artist's or a collectives discord. There are so many stand alone discord servers.

My personal experience is that there are, like, 3 Discord servers that I can actually keep up with in any meaningful sense of the word. I love the number (and quality!) of notifications from this Patreon. My concern is that creators (reasonably!) want to try to minimize the number of places they need to post announcements and such, so they move everything to Discord and neglect those who can't keep up with yet another server (or don't set up permission on the server right, and everybody can @-mention everybody, so their own announcements can't make it above the noise floor). So, if you go Discord, please remember we curmudgeonly little people who are social-media-ed out and like or old-fashioned email notifications.

I totally understand your concern, but I would never abandon posting here to Patreon baring some sort of policy change that would make posting here problematic. I'm honestly looking at this not as a "new place to post content" but as a "place to build community."

I don't think joining someone else's server would be conducive to the kind of community engagement I imagine Discord to be useful for.

Ben

Personally, I'm here for the art more than the community. But I'm not opposed to community.

As someone who runs 2 servers and is a member of many, many more I suggest you take a moment to consider if you have the capacity to update and participate in a Discord often. Its a bit of a burden but if you don't keep the place lively it will just go into someones "junk discord" folder and get checked once in a blue-moon verse remaining in their actively monitored area. Also, as other have said you need to make sure you correctly set-up role and permissions from Day 1 or you will get spammy idiots so its a good idea to see how other Discord groups are set-up. But on a related note don't get suckered into thinking you need to add a Bot with fancy role-assigning functions, not every discord needs that. With all that said. Discord is fun. Go ahead, you can always shut it down if it doesn't work out.
