Just some quick news on what's going on lately for those of you who may be interested but missed the initial announcements or aren't following community news in other places:

RoguelikeDev Does The Complete Roguelike Tutorial

Over at r/RoguelikeDev we've started our annual tutorial/code-along event, where we've got everyone from complete programming beginners to seasoned devs.

You can follow along with a relatively easy tutorial process to make a roguelike of your own over a couple months, or go it your own way with your own tech if you've got the skills and/or determination. Many people have joined already (71 projects so far this year), and we've just started Week 2, but the pace is not all that fast so it's pretty easy to catch up if you want to follow along.

7DRL 2021 Results!

The full results of this year's 7-day Roguelike Challenge are in, and wow there is a lot of great stuff in there... It took a while to reach this point since even though the bulk of the reviewing was finished by April, some issues held things up for many weeks.

But anyway, they're finally here, and we can now see the composite scores and more easily find some of the better entries (because wow there are a lot of 7DRLs these days xD).

Starting with my next stream today we're going to be playing the top 7DRLs from the year, going straight down the list. As usual there'll be plenty of commentary on design as we explore the mechanics, and I'm sure we'll have the devs on for at least some of them, at least those who get wind of the streams since I haven't made an effort to contact them in advance (in part because I don't know how long each game will take anyway and can't offer a time they might want to show up :P).

The process won't be super fast--we're not doing cursory plays in an effort to quickly get through them all, instead it'll be more or less like I do my 7DRL reviews, playing enough to get a good feel for most or all of what the game has to offer, and trying to win if it's both fun and seems reasonably attainable in less than an hour or so.

This year's games look really great, so I imagine each might take longer than usual. It turns out that most of the 7DRLs I judged (the process for which I streamed earlier this year), did not end up near the top of the list, or even on the first page, so we won't even be able to skip many based on that!

So drop by the stream @ 7 PM Tuesday (EST) if you want to enjoy some 7DRL "action," and we'll be at it for about four hours as usual. I'm not sure if we'll have extra streams outside my normal day in the coming weeks, but I will for sure at least be streaming 7DRLs once per week at this time.

For anyone who misses the streams, as usual the content will be archived to YouTube the day after (I also have a playlist specifically for 7DRL-related stream videos, which I've been doing for a few years now).
