From Adal:

Hey Future Lizards!

February kicked off with a trip to NYC for Jemma’s brothers birthday. We got see Hadestown a 5th time and Company for a 2nd time. I always fear I’m missing out on other shows but there’s something I love about returning to a broadway show I know I like and just gaining a deeper appreciation for it. We checked out Cafe Wha? and the Comedy Cellar which were both super fun. Also had some phenomenal food, especially at a place called L’Artusi which might be the best pasta I’ve ever had.

Next week I head to Tennessee for my bachelor party! I was hoping to do New Orleans but I was a bit worried about logistics and of course Covid and even just getting into restaurants with a bigger party of folks. But I’m super excited for what we have planned which is basically just staying a few days at a friends lake house, play games and sit around a campfire!

Last week I moved my sister and brother-in-law to their new place in Chesterton, Indiana which is right near Valparaiso! If you know the area and have any recommendations please send them my way as they’re looking for what to do in town!

This Saturday, March 5th marks 7 years of Hello From the Magic Tavern! What a cool fucking thing we did! Thank you to anyone here who might have listened to the show! Also a huge thank you to Matt for being incredible and to Arnie for not just being incredible but for creating this world and handing me an invite into it. Arnie quite literally changed my life when he started this podcast. Without him I wouldn’t have made Hey Riddle Riddle or gotten to experience all the insanely cool opportunities that Magic Tavern has unlocked for us. If you happen to listen to Magic Tavern and have a spare moment in the next few days, send Arnie a DM or email and let him know you appreciate him! He’s the reason I’m typing these words right now! New nickname for him….The Podfather? Let’s keep workshopping.

Other than that just lots of podcast recording, working on several upcoming projects and trying to spend time with friends when possible.

Oh! I had one thought this month which was….can I get into the Guiness Book of World Records for ‘most podcast guest spots?’ is that even a thing and if so, would I even be in the top 10? If anything I’m trying to chase PFT right? I have to somehow track down all the podcasts I’ve ever guested on and compile a list so I have a concrete number.

Here’s what media I consumed in February -

TV:

  • Ghosts (BBC version) - several people recommended this to me and it was ultimately my mom who insisted I watched and everyone was right. It’s brilliant. My favorite characters are the witch and the boyscout leader. Once I finish all 3 seasons of the BBC show I might check out the american remake? Anyone have opinions on that version?
  • Reacher - just a real fun time. Not necessarily good but watched it all in one night. Premise is…what if Sherlock Holmes was a pro wrestler?
  • Cuphead
  • Murderville
  • Abbott Elementary
  • Fairview - new animated show on Comedy Central starring one of my best friends Joey Romaine! He was Don the Transdimensional Deliveryman on Magic Tavern. On the show he plays a few roles but most notably, Beef the son and Sammy Sugar. I’m incredibly proud of him!
  • Love is Blind Season 2 (woof)
  • Love is Blind Japan (hooray!)
  • Sopranos Season 2
  • Gomorrah Season 2 and 3
  • South Park Season 25
  • Shaq Life Season 2

Movies:

  • Jackass: Forever - funny but the older I get the more I’m watching through my hands hoping their ok. SO MUCH TESTICLE TRAUMA.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • The Kings Man
  • Rory Scoval: Live Without Fear - stand-up

Other Stuffs:

  • The Quacks of Quedlinburg - board game. This is now in my top 5 all time games! I played it for the first time the other day with some friends including JPC and it’s equal parts deck building (bag building really) and press your luck. Looking forward to teaching this game to Arnie and Matt as soon as I grab a copy! If you know of any really good Press Your Luck games please let me know! I have Incan Gold but that’s it and I really want to add more to my game collection.
  • Escape Simulator - Escape Room game on Steam! Played with some friends and it was a blast!
  • QE - board game
  • MIND MGMT - board game
  • Mitski’s new album Laurel Hell - it’s fantastic
  • Maxine Miles podcast
  • You Feel It Just Below the Ribs - about halfway through, really cool book co-written by Jeffrey Cranor

I guested on the following podcasts!

  • Welcome To Night Vale podcast - such a dream to get to play Kareem in the newest episode and get to act alongside Erin and JPC!
  • What Clicks May Come podcast
  • TV Trivia Pod
  • The Big Bad Live Show podcast
  • Philosophy vs Improv podcast
  • The Action Slack Show podcast

Please let me know what you’ve been enjoying so I can check it out!

From Erin

Hello hello!

I haven’t had too much time to watch or listen to anything but I’m caught up on Severance. I really love it and if you like dystopian sci-fi you might like it. Tramell Tillman’s performance in it is so spooky and is really the highlight for me.

I am constantly trying to find new ways to stay organized with ADHD and I finally started using Notion after a billion people told me I should and it helps a lot. I downloaded a template on Etsy for three dollars and it’s for sure helping me stay organized.

I’m also working on superhero Patreon stretch goal and another riddle city type story(that may or may not be a musical) and it’s been so fun and I’m so so so so excited for you all to hear it eventually.

I hope everyone has a great month!

-Erin

From JPC

Hey Riddiots,

It's JPC here and I just want to welcome you to my little corner of the internet. Things may get a little twisted around in here, so strap in and enjoy the ride!

...I never had a livejournal, but that's always how I imagined them. I guess I'll never know now. Anyway, congratulations on completing February, everyone. As of the time of this writing, we have not all been destroyed in nuclear war, so that's cool. And if you're reading this from the distant future to try to establish what livejournal was like, I gotta tell you, I truly have no idea. Go learn how to like...farm or something.

If you're looking for a distraction from the end-times, I've got some recommendations for you this month. My first one was going to be Station 11 on HBO Max but, well, maybe not. I just finished it a couple days ago and it's really compelling, but also potentially a hard watch right now. Another hot recommendation is The After Party on AppleTV. I didn't know anything about it except that it had a great cast so I gave it a shot. It's a mystery/comedy, which is great but it also centers the police, which is not great. I'm trying to limit my consumption of cop media (it's everywhere) but I stuck around for Sam Richardson and Ben Schwartz. And each episode has a unique thematic structure that I find very refreshing.

I also want to recommend a collection of essays called Palestine: A Socialist Introduction from Haymarket Books. If you're unfamiliar with the Palestinian struggle, it's a great starting point. I also just finished the Angela Davis autobiography. I think it was originally published in 1973 and I found it a fascinating piece of history and a sobering reminder of how much and how little has changed in the last 5 decades.

Oh, and if I haven't mentioned Vampire Survivors in a newsletter yet, you simply must play that game. I believe it's on Steam only. It's $3 and it's worth every penny. I got it for Casey and he had to delete it cause it was ruining his life. That's a high endorsement. And I'll also shout out a game called The Quacks of Quedlinburg. It's a board game with a low barrier to entry that I played for the first time last weekend with Adal and I'm obsessed with it. You play as witches building a potion that occasionally blows up and it's just a lot of dumb luck and surprise. Truly one of the more fun games I've played in the last few years and I honestly can't wait to force all of my friends to play it with me in the coming months.

I hope y'all are well and safe.

-JPC

Dead Man’s Draw and Circus Flohcati are both great press your luck games.

I've been listening to the worst idea of all time podcast a lot, which is a podcast I'd love to see do a crossover episode with hey riddle riddle. I feel like there's a big overlap in energies there. A podcast where they watch and review the same movie every week for a year (or every movie in a softcore porn series, or cats each day for a week resulting in the cinema extending its run), and a podcast where they scrape increasingly deep into the barrel for palatable riddles can surely bond.

Can't Stop is a great and VERY simple Press Your Luck game that is still a blast. I also played Cubitos recently which is a cute PYL game that seems complex at first but is a lot of fun and not hard at all once you start playing! I also got a board game from the 90s called Heartthrob which is just amazing and campy as all hell. I think you all would have a field day playing it.

Opinions on the Star Wars attacktix toys?

Aaahhh I used to work at Cafe Wha? and went there every weekend for a year and a half. Glad you liked it!

Adal, have you watched 12 Monkeys, the show? I feel like you would really enjoy it. I’ve taken a bunch of recs from you and have never been let down (Station Eleven are you kidding me??! ♥️) so I hope you see this. Also, Erin, I’m loving Severence! You guys are amazing, thanks for all you do 🙌🏻

Congrats on 7 years of Magic Tavern! It was my first podcast that I ever listened to, and it's how I found out about this podcast. I love it and plan on getting the Patreon for it here soon 🙂 Vampire Survivors is such an amazing game. I was lucky enough to get my copy from JPC when he gave some out on Twitter. I did not expect to love it so much. I have gotten several of my friends addicted to it too. One of them sunk 20 hours into it in the first few days. I cannot recommend it enough 😄

Hi lona! I started listening to worst idea of all time after reading your comment and I LOVE it. Thank you!

jpc if you're wanting to learn more about angela davis, i highly recommend the essay she wrote in jail, women and capitalism: dialectics of oppression and liberation. it's a very good reading that was pivotal for me, i hope you also find it interesting

Magic Tavern was one of my first podcasts, and I feel like it opened up a whole world for me. Finding the guests in new shows, and glimpsing into the Chicago improv scene with all it's amazing folks, and podcasts. Adal your work has changed others too, just so you know. My kids love Animal Parade, and Small Medium or Large. Erin, riddle city is an amazing creation and that's super exciting news.

I'll have to check Notion out. I'd love to know which template Erin is using, sounds like we have similar needs here.

Press your luck games! I also love Quacks. A very casual option is Pass the Pigs - easy easy easy, bring it with you to a bar, teach it in 20 seconds. One that we got in the past few years is Deep Blue - deck building, hand management - you're deep sea diving for treasure and multiple folks can go on the same dive, but only the dive leader controls when you all come back up and there's dangers down there. Also haven't played it in a lil, but Fire in the Library - trying to rescue books before the whole place burns down

Hey Adal, I don't know if you've watched The Mitchells vs the Machines on Netflix but it is must see. It is extremely funny
