Happy November Riddiots!

We hope you all had an oogie spooky October and are happy we’re rounding the corner into all the eating holidays!

From Dr. Recommendations/Adal:

Still fixing up the house slowly but surely! Kind of wild how many costs spring up out of nowhere when you own a house! $800 to JPC proof my kitchen?? I guess I’ll pay it but it seems unnecessary. This seems like the month where I got the least amount of work done and watched/read/consumed the least amount of pop culture but now I’m ready to spend the next 2 months sitting around and watching all the tv! Here’s what little I’ve been keeping up with:

TV:

  1. The Queen’s Gambit - surprisingly what I’ve enjoyed most this month! I didn’t think a mini-series about chess could be thrilling and compelling but here we are! If you are looking for something to watch please check this out! Well worth your time and Anna-Taylor Joy is the new Cate Blanchette.
  2. Song Exploder - great podcast is now a show on Netflix! I’ve only watched the Episode on Hamilton’s - Wait For It but it was wonderful. They dissect the making of a song with the artist in each episode and it’s a goddamn delight.
  3. DEAF U - reality series that goes inside the lives of 5 or 6 students at an all Deaf University in DC. Fascinating look inside a culture I know next to nothing about as well as all the drama that goes along with any reality tv show.
  4. The Comedy Store - Showtime series about the famous stand-up staple in LA. Very much worth watching if you enjoy comedy (which if you are a Patron of us then you’ve probably don’t anymore). Gives a history of the LA stand-up scene and how it all came crashing down and is being built back up.
  5. Schitts Creek: Best Wishes, Warmest Regards - documentary about the filming of the last season of SC. No brainer that everyone should watch this….You just fold it in...

Also watching: Explained - Whose Vote Counts, The Chef Show Season 2, Last Week Tonight, SNL, My Next Guest Season 3, Truth Seekers, Farlo Season 4, Mandalorian Season 2

Movies:

  1. My Octopus Teacher - touching documentary about a man’s friendship with an octopus in the ocean over the course of 2 years. I learned so much about Octopus..ses?
  2. Dolly Parton: Here I Am - I love me some Dolly! This was pretty good but the podcast documentary series was better. This movie bounces around a bit too much and doesn’t seem to have much focus.
  3. Hubie Halloween - Hey! Better than I expected! A-dabbie-doooo!!
  4. Borat: Subsequent Movie Film - Hey! Not as good as I expected! But still some good bits
  5. The Witch - just watched again last night! One of Jemma and I’s favorite scary movies! Terrifying and also starring the Queen’s Gambit Anna-Taylor Joy!

Podcasts:

  1. Threedom - just a delight to listen to. New season and it’s free for everyone to listen to
  2. Bill Buds - gotta support JPC!

I also guested on the following podcasts this month and had a wonderful time!

  • That’s What I’m Tolkien About - LOTR review pod! We discussed the last hour of the first LOTR movie!
  • Cooper Dooper - Twin Peaks review podcast! We discussed what’s usually called the worst ever episode of Twin Peaks as directed by Diane Keaton!
  • Friendly Competition - Game show podcast hosted by my buddy Lex Friedman!

What else? Uhhh...oh yeah!

Starting this Saturday I’m doing a 3 week podcast intensive workshop with Third Coast Comedy in Nashville! It’s three 2-hour classes over the next 3 Saturdays and working on developing your idea for a podcast. https://www.thirdcoastcomedy.club/shows.html?page=event&eid=47172

From JPC:

Reading: I only read one book, but I really enjoyed it. A People's Guide to Capitalism by Hadas Thier which is an introduction to marxist economics. Reading Marx can be a little heavy (it's like reading poetry about market capital) so I really enjoyed this more modern analysis. The author also cites a lot of Marx in her analysis so it's almost like reading a primary source.

Video Games: Still playing a lot of Hades. I'm up to around heat 14ish on most weapons and the game is really taking a turn for the punishing now. Simply a ton of replay value for this game. I also streamed The Return of the Obra Dinn which is an excellent puzzle/mystery game. I'd highly recommend that one and it only takes like 8 hours to beat! I played Warhammer Mechanicus too, which was fine. I feel like I was easily winning all the battles well before I hit the actual ending for the game. I probably could have adjusted the difficulty to make it scale more, but it felt a little one-note. Still, love that Warhammer lore. Blood for the Blood God! I'm also still streaming Darkest Dungeon. Really enjoying that one, as well. I don't love how small your inventory is, because I'm a hoarder (when it comes to video game items but definitely NOT irl) but otherwise I don't really have complaints. There are a bunch of classes which makes battle combinations more interesting. The random events make the game feel fresh and the character perma-death gives stakes to a dungeon crawler. I named a character JPC and he died and that made me sad. I'm a little bummed that Cyberpunk keeps getting delayed, but thems the breaks. I'm not sure what I'll play next, but you can catch me playing games most week days in the Shark Tank (twitch.tv/sharkbarkman), I usually post my stream schedule in the Shark Tank Discord every week.

Oh, and last Friday night I streamed Among Us for the first time and had a fucking blast. I'm probably going to do more Among Us streams in the future with a bunch of different guests.

TV: I only watched one thing on TV and it's Joe Pera Talks To You. This show is very good and there are some Chicago improvisers in it! It's Adult Swim so the episodes are only 10 minutes and it's equal parts soothing and hilarious. That being said, I think I've only seen about 4 episodes. I don't watch much TV!

Podcasts: We launched a Patreon for the Billbuds Popcast (patreon.com/billbudspod) and we already hit our first stretch goal. Johnny and I are trying a "pay-what-you-can" model for the show, so it's only $1 to join (that's the Patreon minimum) and we are going to be releasing patreon-exclusive eps every other week. Our first ep is Six the Musical coming out on 11/2. If you aren't sick of me on podcasts yet, you can also listen to Hollywood Handbook The Pro Version on Sticher Premium. I was on an ep last week.

Other Stuffs:

  1. Thank you to everyone who came to watch/hang out with us during the Livestream show at Lincoln Hall! It was such a joy for us and a special night that we really needed this year. Hopefully we can do more events like that in the near future!
  2. Our November Livestream will be out tomorrow and should include a restaurant review as per Erin’s idea last month! We’re excited to eat for you!
  3. Our Review Crew for November will be up Nov. 9th! We realized the we front load each month with everything (newsletter, Review Crew and Livestream) so we’re trying to start spacing it out a bit over the month for us and to give Casey a bit more breathing room! Thank you for all you do Audio Daddy!
  4. New Stretch Goals are still coming but we’d love your input! What would you like to see/hear from us?!
  5. We love and appreciate you all so much for your support this year! We’re excited to keep growing the Patreon and give you more madness to get your through this madness!

What have you been enjoying?! Let us know what you recommend!

Love,

Adal, Erin & JPC
