This is like... halfway true. The spear as a weapon is absolutely amazing because you don't need a lot of training to have it be an effective weapon, true, which makes it absolutely amazing for what warfare was for most of antiquity. However, it also had a significant advantage in reach over every other melee weapon. To put it simply, additional length on your weapon lets you put a hole in the opponent before they can put a hole in you, and the downsides of the longer weapon are significantly offset by the fact that spearmen were deployed in formations multiple lines deep, so even if someone makes it inside your spear, the person behind you can still stab them. The other advantage? What's cheaper, a stick with a pointy thing on the end or a 2 foot sword? It's the spear, by a long shot.
