Resplendent Nova

Woof, I've seen at least 5 separate full reactions of this wonderful movie. Still hits me every time.

My theory is that Mirabel was meant to be Abuelita's successor, the next keeper of the candle. It took Mirabel and Abuelita working out their issues for Mirabel to gain her Gift. Another theory I have is that Abuelo Pedro's spirit went into the candle, and then Casita, after he sacrificed himself. Just an idea I like. One subtle thing that always gets me is how hard Casita is trying to protect the family even as it falls apart. Casita clearly loves them all so, so much.

One of the things I especially loved about this is the expressions and body language. Like when Dolores said Mariano wanted 5 kids if you look closely Isabella's breathing quickened before she forced out a smile for Abuela and another subtle detail was Abuela removing the only white flower from her hair because it didn't match all the pink ones, great way to subtly show how she became obsessed with keeping everyone at their best out of fear she might lose everything again, because that's what it all came down to. Abuela always cared about her family, but she was acting out of fear and when you do that you can hurt the ones you love without meaning to. Also I really loved the body language with Pepa and her husband during the Bruno song and just their interactions in general. You can tell everything about their relationship just by their faces and body language, especially with the exchange "You telling the story or am I?!" "I'm sorry mi vida go on" her face and his loving touches tell you he's always too overzealous but he's just so loving and supportive of her she can never stay mad. And all this is communicated without being outright explained (like what I'm doing now lol) and I just love that. That's really what I loved most about this movie (besides "We don't talk about Bruno"), it's visual storytelling at its best.

This movie just, I don't know if I feel seen, or called out, or both! I've literally always felt out of step, with peers, with my cousins, and probably around 12/13ish literally felt out of place in my own family. The one person who truly seemed to love me unconditionally was always my grandma. I was always the favorite grandchild, but as I got older I realized that a big part of that was because being Grandma's came with a lot of expectations, a lot of morals and norms that while less common today, were the way her generation lived and were taught to live, and all the other grandchildren had, in her view, screwed up in those areas. She loves them, she wants what's best for them, but unless they conform they will always be failures and disappointments in her eyes. There are parts of myself that I don't share with her because my relationship with her and her opinion of me are more important to me than almost anything else (she still has no idea that I'm bi). I want her to go on believing that she has one grandchild who is what she hoped for, that lives in the way that she expects. But, sometimes I wonder, and this movie has me wondering now. If I told her, would our relationship be more important to her than those expectations? It hurts that I don't have an answer, and it hurts more that I'm kind of afraid to ask.

What a cute little movie, the colors were so pretty and I love how they had a blended family with all skin colors and hair textures its nice to see someone with kinky hair likes mines :). Loved the music, I have the songs stuck in my head now. I watched this a second time and they really put a lot of effort into this, I was looking into the background and I liked how the cousin covered her ears when they had fireworks go off for her brothers gift. That was just a small detail but beautiful nevertheless definitely one of my top favorite Disney animated movies.

YES! I didn't notice that detail about Dolores until my second rewatch. there is just so many wonderful small details put into this movie!

Tristan N Milner

Luca left a bad taste with me. Should I watch this first or the movie itself? Apologies for any bad grammar, our old "buddy" the common cold has paid me a visit.
