The sound of bronze plated keys rattling as they fell into a ceramic bowl echoed through the small home. Home. It had been a while since Mun had laid eyes on it, the realisation struck him more strongly now that he stood in its entrance pulling his scroll bandoleer from his shoulders. The grey furred wolf-rattlesnake hybrid set the bandoleer down on a nearby table and stretched, taking a moment to simply enjoy being back. A medium of sorts – Mun spent time away from home occasionally, when the job called. Just long enough to enjoy the feeling of returning. He had just returned from a three week contract, assessing spirits that were causing some fuss two towns over, and the time weighed on him like it had been months. It hadn't been a particularly troublesome job, the spirits themselves weren't in any way aggressive, but the art of speaking to the other side took some doing. It was all about making connections, after all, and connections took time.
Pushing his shoes off at the entryway the hybrid made his way further into his home, leaving behind the sound of children in the street behind him. Early trick-or-treaters no doubt, looking to get goods from the best houses before they ran out. Mun chuckled, running a paw over his grey furred snout as he remembered his own days out there with a bucket just waiting to be filled. He hadn't had time to put up any decorations himself but the local children knew Mun was always a good source of chocolate and candy for the spooky season – he enjoyed the sweet stuff too much himself not to share. Opening a cupboard, the hybrid looked around only to find, blinking, that his stockpile was empty save for a few dusty lollypops. Of course it was, he had been away for practically the whole of October, giving him no time to stock up.
Muttering under his breath Mun ran a hand through his mane of blue hair. On the ride into town he'd noticed all the usual stores were closed early, well and truly sold out of candy. Not to mention it was getting a little late to go shopping, even if he could find somewhere that was open he'd be competing with every other late shopper. No, that was no way to spend his first night home. The hybrid had another option though he considered, as he pulled his phone out of his pocket and dialled a familiar number. The phone rang a few times before a cheerful, feminine voice answered.
“Hello?” Jenny's voice squeaked a little, but what else could you expect from a mouse?
“Jenny? It's Mun.”
“Mun! Hey it's been a bit, you're back?”
“Yeah, just got in. Hey, I was wondering-”
“Candy,” Jenny cut him off and Mun could imagine her standing there, grinning on the other side of the phone. She knew him too well. She must have known he hadn't had time to stock up like he usually did.
“... yeah. Sorry.”
“Oi! Nothing to be sorry about, work's important! Someone's gotta keep the spirit world in line after all.”
“It was just a job,” Mun started, whenever Jenny talked about his work she talked as though he alone was able to keep the spirit world happy. When she spoke like that though, she spoke with such conviction one could almost believe it.
“Well, all the same, I've got something set aside for you this Halloween, I think you'll like it. Stop by my place?”
“I'll be there soon.”
