Persona 5 related sideproject 02 (Patreon)
Content
I did another character for this side project that I've been doing to chill!
The trope I wanted for him was the public university student - a social justice engaged character! Here in Brazil we have public universities, and they're super good! You need to go through tests or programs to enter in them though. I myself graduated in one, and never had to worry about student loans and stuff like you guys do in the US <:
His persona is based on a historic figure! He was an early 20th century drag performer and Madame Satã was his show persona. An excerpt from wikipedia about him:
" João's infamous character represented an expression of resistance in this post abolitionist era in Brazil where black people, prostitutes, drug users and addicts and other 'deviant' outcasts were deemed useless to society.
He was a skilled street fighter trained in the style of capoeira, and his battles against the police forces were legendary. He routinely fought barehanded against quartets of policemen armed with wooden clubs. Also, it's said he once faced a 24-man platoon and battled them to a stalemate, forcing them to fly away after leaving seven of them badly wounded, two with broken arms and two with split livers.
Thus, João Francisco dos Santos became a living myth that supported and represented the values and lives of such outcasts of society becoming himself a revolutionary icon for the marginalized socially."
Fitting for the theme uh? Dude wasn't just a nice performer, but one badass street fighter as well.
One of the things I want to explore a lot in my body of work is queerness being elevated and celebrated. One of the things i hated in persona 5 is how it'd contradict itself in how it treats minorities.... big fuckit to that!!
Now that the little history lesson is out of the way let's go to the process bwehehe!
>The expression on the sketch was honestly so cute! I've been mellowing a bit of my expressions lately. Perhaps it's tied to how I been feeling lately? I'm ok with the end product though!
>I did the outfit initially as a pink one.... I'm planning a pink suit for another character though! So I started experimenting with colors adjustments.... and honestly I found a bunch of cute options!!! It's always nice to explore your colors like that, you find a bunch of new cool combinations!
"Folião" could translate to "Merrymaker"! It's the name we use for people that really enjoy to celebrate carnaval. That's why he's extra colorfulll!!!
> Exploring the gesture for Madame Satã! I wanted a pudgy guy, with some kinky lingerie, high heels, pearl beads and a cigarette holder - strong early 1900s cabaret energy!! Lots of "webbed" and deep red motif on the fabric to remind you of demonic things. bwahahaha!
> This was the final sketch I settled for. I added puffy sleeves and an actual set of wings. They worked for the best I think!
> Lines with hard shadows!
> Color sketchhhh! I've been very vocal about color sketches..... they help so much!
Also did you noticed I added text on the character's card!!! I tried it before but it didn't work out.... so I focused extra hard and made it work!!!! So I ended up putting text in the other characters cards, check these out!! I think they're way better with text! <<<:
