So, one of the things I frequently get asked about is the baffling ranking system in SpaceCorps… so I figured that I'd share one of my dev notes about it. As you can see, it's all very much work in progress, and it's pretty much all subject to change if the story demands it (or I think of something cooler!) The CR codes you see are based on NATO's OR codes (their method for assigning comparative ranks between different militaries) - and so far I've only got to CR-8.

The first thing to note is that SpaceCorps is an amalgamation of thousands of pre-existing organisations - not just the combined militaries of pre-Union Earth, but everything from the British NHS to the Sicilian Mafia. ServiCorps alone is heavily influenced by the Guild system, Trade Unions, Corporations and Organised Crime. SecuriCorps includes not just a 'standard' military police service, but also a prison/concentration camp section (GULag), and an Intelligence & Judiciary section (Division 9). Sometimes Branches have managed to claw power beyond their standard remit - SciCorps boasts an elite Commando Corps that treads on the toes of both FliteCorps and Forward Infantry.

I'm interested to hear any thoughts you might have on this - including any suggestions or name changes. I'm always open to a good suggestion!

Late to the party here but just wanted to say “thanks” for this. It was driving me nuts that an ensign (an officer) was outranked by a sergeant (NCO), but that they’re in different branches mollified my OCD.

Lol, yeah - my ranking system is unusual! Glad the OCD has been put to bed 😂

I was wondering just what the rank structure was. Thanks!
