There is a show that talks about the development and behind the scenes of various movie productions, the one they made on this show was pretty interesting. It was such an uphill battle that its almost a miracle the movie was made at all.

Michael J Fox was the first choice for Marty, but he was unavailable since he was part of a television show, they actually started filming with another actor, Eric Stoltz. Eric wasn't a good fit though, he felt it should be more like facing existential trauma and it was a serious and bleak movie, not a comedy. Eventually they got permission from the TV studio that Fox could be in the movie, so they fired Stoltz even though they were behind schedule and refilmed it.
