John Wayne is an actor in westerns, but also so is Lee "Van Cleef" who gave the name to the bad guy sheriff. From what I've heard, Van Cleef was a pretty cool genuine guy in person but often played the villain in movies. Also Wyatt Earp is the name of a real US Marshal and famous for the "shoot-out at the OK Corral", which is also a famous movie.

Spaghetti westerns were made by italians, especially Sergio Leone, several of them were adapted from popular Japanese Samurai movies, A Fistful of Dollars was copied from Yojimbo, but with cowboys and bandits instead of samurai gangs. This plot involves a wandering hero coming into a town divided by two rival gangs. This so popular it was even in a Pokemon episode lol. Sergio Leone later inspired a lot of Tarantino as well.
