I don't know why the anime cut this from the source manga but when Miyuki's mother left she took Kei with her (leaving Miyuki with his father) because Kei was smarter and more naturally gifted than Miyuki. Kei eventually returns to her Father and Brother through her own choice, but still

I would love to read the manga one day! sounds so good and if it has more details (like most manga usually has compared to anime, for time reasons I'm sure) well then it's for sure worth a read.
