"Tan" is a terminology from Chinese Taoism. It's a type of elixir that looks like beads, usually stored in a dried gourd. The tree guy mentioned it last episode. However, in ancient Japan, Japanese call the elixir "Tokijiku no Kagunomi", which is a fruit that looks like a tangerine. That's why in the anime, both criminals and executioners tried to find sth like tangerine at first. Also Chinese Taoists believe that gods eat a special type of peaches to make them immortal. I think that the author take that reference and let the tree guy provide peaches to main characters.
