I like the topics this arc addresses. Place this back 12+ years ago, when it came out, and the fact that it's a mainstream Shounen manga, it not something you would ever expect. I feel like this subject matter in anime has only been touched upon more recently, within the last couple of years, and even then from less highly-centralized sources. That's why I appreciate what the author wrote. I also enjoy that the arc wasn't solely about Kyuubei's identity. It's about the Yagyuu family's mistakes vs. the Yorozuya family's and Shinsengumi's family's beliefs. I didn't like Kyuubei after this arc finished. But, big shocker, it's not a spoiler to say she is a re-occurring character. It's her continued presence that makes me come to like her qualities. I am, however, glad to see a larger expansion on Otae's inner feelings, her motivations, and something that makes her more than just a main girl of the story. She belongs with the crew, every single violent part of her. Do I ship her with Kondo or Gintoki? Well, that's a pretty obvious answer isn't it? I'm sure you can guess. I put this above Benizakura personally, because it has more appearances from the other main characters that I like. I know it doesn't have a movie (neither did Benizakura till 2010), but it does have the Shinsengumi (Toushi, Sogou, Kondo) who are without a double the main heroes/counterparts to the Yorozuya. This is where you really start to appreciate them, with the flashbacks of their younger selves, and the comedy screentime they share with Gin, Shinpachi, and Kagura.

Like you I found out she’s was a girl when it was revealed. I had first thought she was girl but didn’t make the connections. It’s funny because, most people I know knew before it was revealed 😂.

I read somewhere a unique summary for gintama : "A depressed samurai suffering ptsd takes in 2 kids who help him recover(in day to day life). " it then hit me in op/ed gin always looks sad when he is alone and has a bright smile when kagura and shimpachi join him.
