The Hifumi (1,2,3) and Miyo (3,4) is a nice touch.

And if you're reaallyy into ryukishi07's works Miyo's name also refers to something else that's pretty crazy!

You know... it might be unpopular but I can sympathize with Miyo (even in her adult life). As a child, having successive traumatic events happen like that (both parents dying, being grossly abused both mentally and physically) easily left her in a state of severe powerlessness. She was always at the whim of SOMETHING, whether it be fate or others. So when her only savior, the one she admired more than anyone else was utterly humiliated I'm sure it triggered that feeling of powerlessness for her again. The feeling of not being able to help the only one that ever helped her. So in order to never feel that way ever again she decided to take advantage of her situation and work harder than anyone, even graduating at the top of her class to immortalize the only light she ever had. Once she finally experiences the power that had always been stripped from her she became absolutely drunk on the idea and obviously you know what comes next. Now it isn't always healthy to do onto others what they have once done to you, but in a sick and twisted way, isn't Miyo just a misunderstood and tortured soul? Anywho...! Regardless of what we think, I’m sure the majority can agree that Miyo is much better than most of the 1-dimensional villains seen in other works of fiction. ✌

Oh My GOD! I somehow never saw that end scene from episode 15. That was awesome, I got goosebumps. I'm not sure if this would be an all time anime classic, but certainly within the Horror genre (which isn't very big). It's pretty much the go to horror anime that everyone knows and loves.

The Visual Novel was first. I think Ryukishi07 was self-conscious about his manga-drawing skills so he decided to go that way instead. The story of this ended up being so good that other people were willing to turn it into both manga and anime. Everything from the When They Cry-verse (Higurashi, Umineko and Ciconia) is VN-first. Higurashi got a good anime and a good manga, Umineko has a good manga and an anime that most fans like to pretend doesn't exist.
