This quote makes a lot more sense that I found online (I didn't understand it in the anime):

"This essay may actually end up justifying genocide and oppression due to racial or religious affiliation." – Takano Hifumi

This shoooow. The amount of layers caught me off guard so much the first time I watched it. 😫 It honestly was this combination of elements that solidified this as one of my favorite anime. A somewhat similar series in more ways than one is another favorite of mine, "Shinsekai Yori".

Seriously tho, this show is one of those shows where when you rewatch it, you would look at it in a totally different perspective.

Sometimes flashbacks in a story aren't meant for you to feel bad for a character. It's a storytelling element, made for you to connect the dots. I, too, don't have sympathy for a character simply because of a tragic history. What I do learn is how it contextualizes that person's life, revealing how they got to that particular point. Forgiveness does not cross my mind. Doubly so here in "Higurashi" where the main characters have suffered so much because of Takano. I could only imagine the Black Plague is referring to the bubonic plague which swept through Eurasia, killing 200 million people in the past. A plague which kills people indiscriminately... Death at your doorstep. The spread of religious zealotry probably manifested as a result of the hopelessness people felt. How terrifying it would've been to have no means of a cure.

The scene about the reason Rika can lose her memories is basically cut off in the anime, but it is explained in the VN at the start of the Massacre chapter. Her memories just before death are always blurred/erased, which Rika refers to probably a sign of a violent death. To avoid that, she tries to prolong her life. They totally skipped this part in the anime, so it can cause a bit of confusion.
