War generally involves strategy and tactics and some bit of luck... coming in with superior technology and absolutely decimating everything and the other side having no chance is more like a slaughter than war.. is what that guy meant. I imagine that just being mowed down like cattle is not a particularly preferable way to go, particularly for someone who has made war their profession.

A lot of this series is how medieval people and mindset react to modern world. The bandits were soldiers that survived the first attacks on the Japanese. In olden days war was considered a glorious endeavor, but modern war has largely erased that. These bandits can't comprehend that the God of War would condone such a one sided slaughter as being war.

Likewise, a medieval mindset could never think of giving up such an advantage after winning a battle, but it was common practice for Empires like Rome to make treaties and use it as an excuse to declare war when broken. So, to Pina it's like a nightmare politically speaking.

I feel like there are a lot of underlying themes and depth to Gate along with a lot of historical realism and concepts, but I also feel like it is caught between trying to be light-hearted and serious, so passes on a lot good opportunities. I kind of want to read the light novel to see how much more detail it has.

lmao no. it's just another trash isekai. the only decent isekai was shield hero. gate doesn't try to do anything new, nor does it deviate from the other isekai themes that make the genre trash. The only thing it does do differently is removing some of the more cancerous characteristics of the genre to a point where it might look okay to the lowest common denominator or someone who hasn't seen/read much isekai.
