Hello LARGE BABIES..........

Today I have for you drawing requests, questions, and some extra stuff all in one post....

First the drawing requests!

Jae asked for Rachel and Celisse wearing cowboy hats and riding a large toad.

Sgt. Pinecone asked for Garfield with a third eye

CowandFox asked for Stilton holding a knife and fork like the really good shot in the Cats 2019 trailer

Natt asked for a drawing of them and their partner

Annie asked for Chowder

Last but very definitely least, Linden asked for sonic the hedgehog with sexy legs. Sorry

Question time!

Shea asked: when exactly did you find your drawing style? Have any tips on finding one?

Finding my style has taken me my entire life... In fact I think I'm still finding it! Something I've consciously wanted to do though is make sure my drawings have the same energy as when I was younger, which has made it so that even though all the drawings throughout my life look different in how they're constructed, they still "feel" like "me". I'm very proud of keeping that energy! If you look at how I drew as a kid VS now, they look very different in their construction, but they have the same approach and energy.

For finding style- I'd say try to borrow from real life and focus on the parts that you find interesting about how the body is constructed... Take stuff from cartoons or paintings or whatever that you like and see how you can skew it and make it your own. Experiment with lines! See what happens when you push lines farther than they're "supposed" to go. Just explore with your drawings! Intentionally make mistakes. Bla bla bla

Kimberly asked: Have you ever considered making brickfilms / lego videos again? Your pitch document from frederator was the perfect premise for a lego tv show and I think you really have the right idea when it comes to the style/tone of lego films.

Thank you Kimberly! I was really proud of that pitch. I've been thinking about making lego movies again because I really miss the simplicity. It would be fun to just make the lego city show that I pitched on my own with lego stop motion. Maybe someday!

Abbey asked: Have you ever considered 3d? Like blender or maya.

I have! I'm not very good at it. Maybe some day I'll try again. Here's a CGI sample reel I made in high school that I for some reason included in my college applications: https://www.facebook.com/jonniphillipsart/videos/907126869311245/

Jae asked: Hi, I'm curious how you’re able to make your characters feel so dimensional while drawing with a direct line and animating straight ahead!

Hi Jae! I try to approach my lines like they're both flat and dimensional at the same time, if that makes sense. I want there to be a slight dimensionality to the flat cartoonishness, so I try to keep in mind the shape of the character in the space that it "exists" in. It's a little bit hard to explain the technical aspect of how I do it, but a lot of it is just feeling it out. The ability to do it just came from practicing doing it a lot and over time I figured out how to do it very quickly.

Linden asked: what’s ur favourite food place in LA

Hmmmm. I really like Burger Lounge. I'm eating there tonight. Ye haw. There's a lot of really good thai food places in Thai Town, where I was living a month ago before I moved.

BONUS STUFF!

I'm working on the Rachel n Grandpa pitch bible. Here's a small selection of the character bios! Please don't share these :)

Love you all! Scrimbles I am sending out your packages very soon, sorry for the delay, life is KICKING MY ASS ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amen!

Jonni
