Speaking of embodied cognition - have you read D'Amasio's "The feeling of what happens"? He postulates that consciousness arises from keeping track how your body map (pulse, breathing, blood pH, sensory input, etc. - basically hypothalamus and right somatosensory cortex (RSS)) changes in reaction to entities in the world. If you damage your hypothalamus, you either die very quickly or become a vegetable. If you damage your RSS, you get a profound disturbance of consciousness called anosognosia. Look it up - it's fascinating (Ramachandran is the guy to look for).
