The problem with the masters is that she asked to buy her masters from Big Machine, and they refused to sell them to her unless she basically bought them back one at a time by recording a new album. I mean and also pay for it. She thought it was fucked that nobody else had to sign an album deal to buy her record masters so she refused. and then Scott sold to Scooter, who he knew bullied her through the Kanye thing. So that is where the betrayal is. It wasn’t that he sold them, it was who he sold them to Also he didn’t tell her directly. He told her that he sold the label, but he did not say it was to Scooter. She found that part out third party.

To piggyback off of littlemssunshine above in the comments, when her contract was up at Big Machine and she was shopping around record labels she could have signed to continue with Big Machine, a place where she was not fully supported (they really didn't want to let her go pop, she had to fight HARD to be able to release 1989) and slowly be allowed to buy back her previous work or sign with Republic Records with a deal that allows her to own her work and within her deal she was able to help other artists on her label i think with streaming compensation or something like that. So basically she could choose her past or future for her and other artists so she chose Republic and hoped that when Big Machine (Scott Borchetta) inevitably sold her masters, which she knew they would do, she thought she would AT LEAST be given the chance to bid on them. Then as we know, she found out with the rest of us that Scooter is the one who bought them. Also this reminds me of "mad woman" and I believe those lyrics allude to her three public enemies; Kanye, Scooter, and Scott.

This is really— late but I'm new, I actually grew up with the great great great something granddaughter of William Wordsworth! So that shocked me a bit when Taylor said hs name, as he's mainly a British known poet. NTM, I understand the want to live in the Lake District, it's a gorgeous place to visit now and then.

I think the hurt from Taylor about the masters comes from the fact that it was definitely purposeful and a power move. She would have paid any amount of money to own her masters but was never given the opportunity. It was all shady. She trusted Scott and he went behind her back to sell to Scooter so they could both make millions. They purposely slighted her to try to cash in for themselves. I would be really upset too if that were the case.

Yes, she was more upset because they knew she wanted to buy her masters back and went behind her back to make this deal and never offered her the chance to match or outbid it, which is super shitty even in industry practice because if it really was about money Taylor would have paid the money but it was far more sketchy than that, she is well aware of how the industry works so people saying she's mad about the sale itself don't get it, there is more to it than that

I've seen the long pond studio sessions before, but rewatching it now years later makes me appreciate folklore all over again in a whole new way. That's my favorite part about Taylor and her music.. it's constantly evolving with us. Sometimes you wake up and put one of her songs on for the millionth time, but it just hits incredibly different that day.

I’m sure someone in these comments laid it all out somewhere in the comments but the reason for the anger behind her masters is because her manager had always talked trash about Scooter. Her manager told her he would let her have first chance to buy her own masters and then sold it to scooter behind her back. She heard about it from social media. My tears ricochet says it perfectly. He tossed out the good years and basically a family member for a cool $300mil. Shady shit.

You're a bit mixed up on the masters issue. First off Taylor wanted to buy her masters from Big Machine but they would not let her buy them unless she agreed to sign another 6 album contract and she'd earn one master per new album she made for them. She decided to let go of her past and focus on her future but she was really hurt by this cause it was her hard work. She had accepted that her work was gonna be taken from her as a result of her not signing another deal with then. But then Scott sold it to Scooter Braun who she had told him she had issues with. He also represented Justin Bieber and Kanye West both artists who had said and attacked Taylor personally.
