It's not a coincidence that this one made you think of the Jungle Book! They reused a lot of characters and even character animations (Baloo and King Louie in Jungle Book dancing vs. Little John and Lady Cluck is a very easy to spot example). They reused the models for the vultures too...and I'm sure more that I missed! And I love that you point out that these older movies were made BY a different generation. Movies made by more recent generations are, as you noted, very emotionally stirring, and often have ambiguous or nameless (or abstract) "bad guys"...while these older ones were more about celebrating literature, classic stories, tradition, and good vs. evil. I loved seeing this again, it's been a LONG time. (Oh...and you didn't hear those lyrics wrong...oh dear...)

I love this movie so much, and the book, as a kid. I, too, had a bit of a crush on Robin Hood. Mainly as a character in general. Just as I shipped him and Marian no matter what the storytelling was. I will totally introduce my kid-if I ever have one-to this story
