I think this episode is the perfect point to finally delve into the core theme of Kill La Kill and the pun driving it, since this episode shows it off so well. The system as you called it throughout the reaction is specifically fascism, and Kill la Kill as a whole serves as a sort of critique of fascism and its methods (the show starts off with its first line being about Hitler’s rise to power for a reason). The pun behind it all is that both it and the word fashion in Japanese are loan words and as a result sound very similar. So in this show fashion represents fascism through the clothing that Satsuki uses to control the school (and as they mentioned 2 eps ago, almost all of Japan at this point), all of that ties in wonderfully with the main resistance against them being called Nudist Beach and our protagonist being nearly naked whenever she fights, the freedom of nudity is being used a bit more literally here. Ryuko is still using a uniform of sorts of course (And Tsumugu showing up to try and pre-emptively kill Senketsu 2 eps ago because he doesn’t want her swallowed up by her power seems like a very good way to mirror the fear of a rebellion against an authoritarian government becoming an even worse authoritarian government after the fact) but the individual uniforms more represent power I feel, and this power is doled out by Satsuki to her select few to keep them loyal and in line, which works its way down the chain keeping everyone under her heel even though she only has the direct support of a select few putting their lifestyle above everyone else, the metaphor seems a bit more obvious when put like this. This episode masterfully ties in with the overarching theme by showing the full process that Satsuki uses to dominate and twist people to her will on Mako and her family, it’s really effective since we’ve been shown a few times now (and at the end here again) that Mako and Ryuko have a really great friendship at this point with Mako unconditionally accepting Ryuko and her quirks and standing up for her in her own insane Mako way all the time, seeing her turn like this really drives the point home but at the same time the ending of the episode has more to it than just being a really heartfelt moment. Taking the overall metaphor into account it feels like the writers were trying to use this moment as a way to say that no matter what there will be some people who will refuse to be bent to the will of a despot, and that that good that will be found in a few people is a critical failing of fascism that it can’t hope to control. That doesn’t entirely apply so much to Satsuki’s situation since despite this whole endeavour doing nothing but feed more life fibers to Senketsu and act as a defiance of her will she’s of course incorporated this into her master plan as you can see by her reaction. Overall I didn’t think too much about this episode when I was first watching this show, but over my many rewatches and learning more and more about the show it’s become an absolute standout episode of the first cour for me. Oh and I dunno if you noticed or not but there’s a post credits scene for a bit after you stopped recording your reaction, you should watch that before the next episode if you haven’t.

I really miss going and visiting my grandparents. Me and my Dad used to go and meet them every week, do some yard work for them and then spend the day just talking.
