Bakemonogatari Episode 5 Reaction

Two rank promotion is a thing that happens when you die in the line of duty, in honor of your service you are promoted two ranks, in police, military or other jobs that have rank its a customary thing to do in Japan, , in the episode Mayoi uses it to say she died as a ghost and is enjoying her post ghost ghost life.

There is a Tale called Tale of Jiraya the great, a really famous story in folclore in which there is a character called Tsunade, the same name as Hachikuji's mother. Tsunade has the ability to use slug and snail magic. I love this episode, not only because of the characters which are amazing, but also the lesson about perspective, how depending on the perspective on the matter, you don't necessarily are wrong. We see the story by Araragi's perspective, but to Senjougahara the story may be completely different. Great reaction as always

Also, Zen, I really want to know which order you will be watching the rest of series. Some people may argue to watch Kizumonogatari a lot later, using the anime releasing order but I completely disagree with that. The 3 Kizumonogatari movies were planned to launch right after Bakemonogatari, but there were several production problems, which caused it to be delayed, it wasn't for creative reasons that we had to watch it later. The Light Novel releasing order is Bakemonogatari > Kizumonogatari > Nisemonogatari> the rest..., the intended order that the author wanted us to experience the story. All the reactors that I saw used this order to watch it and I sincerely think it's the best one, there are a lot of plot points that you wouldn't understand properly seeing the anime release order. That said, thanks for reacting to the show, I'm loving it!

Mr Rys

These subtitles are really bad... some of the things they say have completely opposite meaning from what the characters say

Us folks in the Discord made sure to tell him to watch it in the light novel order. I gave him it personally with the exact same reasoning you're using, which is good.

Perhaps you could provide a link with good subtitles? If you're going to complain about it, the least you could do is help out, lol. There are a million different versions fansubs for this show.

From what I could see these subs are just super literal about a lot of things, which often misses the point. I recommended the ANE, ANE-modified, or Coalgirls subs for bake, and Coalgirls for the rest of the show before Zen started though. This isn't any of those I'm pretty sure. There's certainly been a few sketchy moments with these subs but these are far from the worst Bakemonogatari subs out there scarily enough.

Mr Rys

I am pretty sure that those are official subs from some streaming website, so I assumed he watches it from official sources but yeah ANE is best for bakemonogatari

Another arc done and with a damn fine ending as well, Senjougahara's confession is always really fun to see people react to, and the dialogue at the very end calling back to the conversation in episode 3 is fantastic as well. Using "Senjougahara tore" as his reply when they were talking about the word earler is great on its own, but then you add that that amazing piano soundtrack you were talking about is also named Senjougahara Tore and it just gets better. Speaking of those, that song is an instrumental version of Senjougahara's OP, and just before it the other song you pointed out was the instrumental version of Hachikuji's OP. I believe most of the arcs in the series generally play an instrumental version of the relevant OP near the end of the arc.

He messaged me on discord right after my comment and said he thought the ones he got were ANE, but he'll go double check it and consider some other ones either way, presumably either ANE-modified or Coalgirls unless someone else sends some better suggestions. At least these aren't absolutely awful, the official subs are way worse than this IIRC. Just as literal but with less translator notes, a worse translation and no lyrics in the OP so I'm pretty sure these aren't the official ones in any case. These still have quite a few issues but they manage to carry the important parts of the story across just fine without me feeling the need to go clarify in the comments, which for Monogatari subs isn't bad.

Mr Rys

the biggest mistake I saw was when it said that Araragi argued with his sisters and didn't want to return home because of Hachikuji, when it is the opposite - he met Hachikuji because he argued with his sisters and didn't want to return home

Stealth Potato

I went over the explanation in the ep again and don't see that at all, the subs pretty explicitly state that he ran into her because he didn't want to return home. Care to provide a time stamp to what you're talking about incase I missed it?

Mr Rys

around 12 minutes "The reason why you feel awkward on Mother's Day, why you fought with your sister, and why you don't want to go home... is her."
