Yesssss! I have wonderful memories of the live action film from 2002. It had an amazing OST from Supercar, this shoegaze band that transitioned into electronic music, much like Radiohead did around the same time.

Very excited for this one, probably personal bias but it's a masterpiece in my book. Hope you like it and i hope it puts you on to more sports anime as well!

When you said the art reminds you of something you didn't know, maybe you've probably seen images from Tekkonkinkreet? It's another work by the same author, Taiyo Matsumoto, which also got a movie around 2006. And yeah, the themes you're talking about during the ED theme are exactly what the story will jump into. I'm very excited to see you dive in to what this show has to offer :)

Great stuff, I'm glad you like the art style as not everyone does. I personally love it. This and hajime no ippo are the only sports anime I've seen, but I love them both, would be awesome if you get to hajime no ippo some day.

Kong Wenge comes China, the country which is the best at Ping Pong. He see's it as a punishment to have to play in Japan in order to make a living because he was kicked off of China's top team. What I really liked about this episode was that Wenge actually spoke Chinese, I thought it was an interesting touch to add to the episode.
