That was similar to my experience in Japan as well. Quite a number of apartments only had a washer, but no dryer. However, the place I stayed in had bars to hang your clothes in the bathroom, and there would be a button to press to turn on a hot air vent in the ceiling, and your clothes would be hanging over the tub and drying from the hot air.

The doll you see the Professor messing with is a Daruma Doll which depicts the founder of Zen Buddhism. Their are many forms they can come in but the one you see in the show is one of the most common they generally don't have any eyes at first and you fill the one in while setting a goal and then only fill in the other once that goal is complete. It does make me wonder what goal Nano set for herself with it.

RE: the laundry story from the OP, that's how I dry my clothes to this day haha--hanging them over a heater! Also that Yukko vs Mio drawing segment makes me cackle every time I see it XD. I completely agree about humor being rooted in reality, that's why this series works so well. It's about everyday life, heck, that's the where the name comes from! I like series like Konosuba where it's a little mean-spirited and about idiots getting their comeuppance, but there's also a big appeal to shows like this where it's more lower stakes and sometimes innocent
