How do you determine the alien languages?

I make shit up ;) But to be more specific, I come up with a small handful of rules that might govern a particular alien language- word length (is it a mono or multi syllable approach), the cadence, particular letters or sounds that might show up more commonly than not, etc. Certain sounds can make a made-up language sound different, flowing and elegant or barbaric and to the point. But in the end it comes down to just making up stuff until it sounds like it would make sense :)
