Why do I hear Ride of the Valkyries all of a sudden? =P

I'm really confused by the grammar in the last panel. Seems like using a Future-in-the-Past Perfect form here is quite unnecessary. What does it mean? That they are incredibly lucky to get this reinforcement? Then why not say "We HAD better odds..."? It's not like he means "If the circumstance had been different (in the past) our odds of winning the lottery would have had been better (again, in the past). But they weren't." 🤷🏻‍♂️ Or am I missing something?

"We would have had better odds of winning the lottery" without the contraction. Makes sense to me.
