I see where you're coming from, but I would suggest that the opposite argument would be "Would that response be appropriate if he were a human?" It's easy to suggest simply "turning him off" if you view him as an object. Alternatively, consider this: If it were a puppy, and it was beaten, starved and mistreated. Then let's say it grows up to be a snarly, mean dog... is that the dog's the fault? Or the owner's Do you just as readily move to destroy it, or do you question if it can be rehabilitated. Perhaps it IS too far gone, but for most people that's a last resort.
