I believe that the irony of "free backups" was specifically intended by the author.

"Free [y] with the purchase of [x]." Is a common marketing tactic. Like the "Free twitch prime subscription with the purchase of an amazon prime subscription" deal. Obviously you're paying for both at a reduced rate, but "free" attracts people a lot more than any other discount.
