Yes, there is oxygen in the ship. A tiny bit, which is why there's any flash at all. But there's no atmosphere, and nothing to shape the explosion. So the light will radiate straight out, creating a spherical explosion. So while I understand that most people expect an explosion to look like an explosion regardless of the science because it's what is comfortable, I didn't feel like that was a good enough reason to continue perpetrating the trope. After a few pages, the readers will become familiar with the visual language I'm using here, and be able to recognize an explosion in space when they see it. :)

I am a fan of the spherical explosion. Just based on the little bit of debris we see the weapon used was massively overwhelming and destroyed the entire patrol craft. So the energy released by the detonation of fuel, weapons and air happened all at once. A less powerful weapon might have left enough of the patrol craft intact to give the explosion a shape but that is contrary to who our bounty hunter is. My opinion is that our bounty hunter will not be prone to the classic Hollywood bad guy mistakes. You are either useful to the mission or not. Not being useful means only two things to this guy. Dead or in another sector! lol So using a weapon on the patrol craft that guarantees a kill with a zero survival chance is right in line with who he is. Good job Tim.
