So Patreon has realized how thoroughly they fucked up, and decided NOT to implement their proposed fee changes going forward.

While that doesn't do much to help with the dozens of Patrons I've already lost as a result of this boneheaded move, I am pleased that my supporters going forward will not be bled dry by incremental fees.

Thank you all for sticking with me through the uncertainty. Onward and upward!

We messed up. We're sorry, and we're not rolling out the fees change. - The Patreon Blog

Creators and Patrons, We've heard you loud and clear. We're not going to rollout the changes to our payments system that we announced last week.

I think the bigger issue than people who aren't going to come back in general is the people who will come back but who are now going to re-evaluate, and in many cases scale back, the number of creators they pledge to, and possibly how much they pledge. That might end up being good for some patrons if it spurs supporters to keep innovating with pledge rewards, but an arms race for pledges won't, in the long run lead to better content, long term support for creators, and/or be good for anyone.

That and the timing was pretty bad. December/January are stressful on a lot of people's finances with bills from holiday spending. (And people who do work under annual contracts often have their current one ending in December and the new ones may not start right at the beginning of January.) Those that might be inclined to come back might decide to skip a month to get that in order. Then they'll just forget for a while .. or forever.
