Philip Whiting

I had a good laugh out of this one.

Such a consequential, plot- and character-survival-critical situation , with a a frankly subjective field (belief and its expression) would never have been resolved with a die roll at my table. I'd probably bring it up to player discussion, dissecting the character's actions leading up to this point. It would take a unanimous agreement for it to pass, though.

It's less about the characters actions, though, and more about how the character perceives himself. He claims to be righteous and selfless, but does he thoroughly believe that, beyond shadow of doubt? Or does he just like how it sounds said aloud? It's a test of faith, not necessarily a test of his ability to follow a doctrine or the letter of the law. Technically he could have murdered an old lady (as a drastic example) five minutes prior, but as long as he completely and utterly believed he did it for just and true reasons, the blessing would have found no doubt within him to burn away/purify. So it was a dice roll partly because it was a personal decision/risk and partly because a drawn out group discussion was just going to slow down the pacing, and first and foremost I'm writing a story here ;)
