Enemy Mine - re:View

Mike and Jay talk about a movie no one remembers for way too long.

Steve

Enemy Mine? Is this the Rich Evans biography about his relationship with Mike?

Anonymous

Praise our Lord and Savior Cameron Mitchell, my Tuesday morning is saved!!

Joey LaCorte

A mike and Jay review of a personal cult classic I've semi-recently watched? This is why we pay the big bucks.

Andy

My most lasting memory of this film as a kid was him saying "Mickeyyy Mouuuussse". Need to watch it again - i loved it at the time, and it still held up when i watched it 10 or so years ago

Shevchenko

holy shit, I saw this when I was a kid and failed for 20 or so years to describe it well enough for anyone to tell me what it was haha

Shevchenko

hahahah fuck the edit to get the pun in was amazing

Conor

The story that inspired "Hell in the Pacific"

schopi

Well, that was surprisingly fast. Now I gotta watch the movie first tonight.........

Jessie Zimmer

"... a mime serial killer ..." my brain immediately followed that up with, "of course you did, Jay."

Anonymous

Excellent episode. Have you guys seen/plan on doing a re:View of Silent Running?

Anonymous

Ooooohhhhhhh I get it. Enemy 'Mine'.

I loved this movie so much growing up for some reason. I forced my husband to watch it with me recently, and it was weird for him. It's still my favorite movie about intergalactic man-love. Lol

Manuel Johnen

I love that Mike now stops the video in mid-play to add jokes that he thought of later while editing...

Manuel Johnen

...but I still hate "Enemy Mine", that stupid piece of garbage that ruined Wolfgang Petersen forever.

QB

More Trek references for Mike: the actress who played Minuet appears in this film, and the child actor went on to play a Jem'Hadar on DS9.

AshesBoomstick

This was on TV quite a lot back in the day. I must have seen it about 15 times. I watched it again about 15 years ago. I liked it for the same reasons as you guys. It has a good middle section, and kind of becomes less good at the end. But still worth checking out.

Manuel Johnen

Also, general nitpick, Americans really need to stop pronouncing "Boot" like it rhymes with foot or food... really, just say it like you'd say the word "boat", even that is preferable... :P

Someone should make a supercut of them mentioning the Airplane Set from Ed Wood (1994).

Language changes over time, and you need to get over it! That's real smooth brain energy, and we need to shake that shit off

run_away

I always think of Enemy Mine in canon with Alien Nation, even though it isn't. Speaking of which, I hope one of the RLM guys has fond memories of that movie so they'll talk about it at some point.

andrew

Speaking of Dave Bautista…DID YOU SEE DUNE?!?!

andrew

Also I just realized the woman in Enemy Mine is Minuet from TNG ep “11001001” (Carolyn McCormick).

Anonymous

Did somebody say, "DUNE!?" Good movie review never saw this one as a kid, looks like for the most part its something I'd of enjoyed - not sure I'd watch it now as an adult.

Anonymous

This movie reminds me of my grandmother more than any movie. She really liked it even though it wasn’t an “old lady” movie. Ironically today was her birthday. I’m probably the only human for whom your Enemy Mine review was some emotional resonance.

Anonymous

Thank you for your work.

I remember 9 years old me, sitting on the carpet and watching this film for the first time on TV. It moved me so deeply, and I rewatched it so many times. Then, oblivion... until now! Thank you for bringing back those lost memories!

DonMac

It cracks me up when the guys talk about a movie's music because it's clear that they aren't really into film scores. Maurice Jarre composed the music for this and he was a major Hollywood composer at the time. But that fact does make the rather generic music even more disappointing given that it's from someone with a lot of talent.

Manuel Johnen

Ah, that's why the score is so JARRE-ing... BA DUM TSS! I'll let myself out...

Please consider reviewing ᑐᑌᑎᕮ in the ᑎᑌᑐᕮ. You know, for cinema. You do like cinema, don’t you?

Clancy Bundy

Always wondered if Vin Diesel liked this one cause he had subterranean tentacle monsters in that Riddick movie.

Anonymous

Tots and pears on your therapy Mike. May you get well soon.

DUNE. Desert planet. A planet that RLM dare not speak about.

Anonymous

The author put out a compilation of Enemy Mine and related stories in that universe a few years ago. I remember it being a good read with a lot of discussion on language and culture. As for the war, the Humans and Dracs are very similar. Their growing interstellar empires were trying to colonize an area of space and looking for similar planets. Both claimed several planets as their own, refused to concede, and eventually went to war over who had the rights to colonize those planets. Both sides saw each other as barbaric invaders and really never made a large effort to talk to each other. If I remember the story correctly, the Drac child that Dennis Quade cares for gives humanity the opening to begin being seen beyond mindless barbarians and open some form of peace negotiations with the Drac.

Wow. I have... never heard of this. I don't think I ever even saw the cover at my video store. Am I the only one?

Leon Illiann

Oh Mike, I guess I can see why you wouldn't mention it as a Star Trek reference episode, as there wasn't the same animosity - But "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra"?

Anonymous

I loved this movie as a kid.

Mike St Louis

I saw Enemy Mine in the theater if I recall. It’s been a long time but I remember enjoying it. Was good to hear a discussion about it. A little gem. Are you lads going to venture to a theater to see Ghostbusters or Spider-Man?

AllGoodNamesRGone

Good stuff. I can't say I was even aware of this movie, but that's what's great about Re:View. You guys can talk about the great movies or you can highlight forgotten films like Freaked, Enemy Mine, or Ice Pirates. I kind of like when you guys dig into the past to expose forgotten stuff to us.

Marvin Falz

The unintentional reference in person of the miner on the moon base in Space Cop is fascinating. Prompted me to watch Space Cop with the commentary track turned on. And I wondered how any story you wanted to tell, would turn out, if you guys had the ressources to lead a large film team, so that you don't have to do most of the work yourself, while also creating the amount of content your YouTube audience is used to. Plus the PreRec streams. That was superhuman of you guys.

Marvin Falz

The vignettes in this re:View are new. At least I'm not aware to have seen vignettes in the re:Views before this one. They create more focus on the area of the image with the important information (the review), and also create atmosphere, in this case since the vignette is pretty much dark, I guess at the black point, the image feels ominous, like there's something outside of the vignette, that's lurking in the shadows, waiting to intrude and disturb the talk. The darkness of the vignette enhances the deep red of the curtains.

The first 4 minutes of this video are exceptional. A pleasant reminder of what was before these frauds started phoning it in.

Alessio Roic

I always found Dennis Quaid to be more charming and a better actor than Harrison Ford. Just picked some bad movies, but Innerspace is still one of my favorites from the late 80s.

Anonymous

Hey have they said anything about DUNE yet???

JTruts

I'm voting for Jay's intro this time.

Anonymous

A bit sad they don't want to talk Dune. It's actually one of the few "real" sci-fi films Hollywood has made in a while.

Anonymous

You should read the 'november updates' post from november 2nd if you think they aren't discussing dune

Anonymous

After the mime story at the beginning of the video clocked in at 4+ minutes, I was 100% expecting them to cut to the Ishtar trailer when the real discussion started.

Tony C

more TNG (holding my bowl up earnestly)

Anonymous

This was great, thank you guys!

Anonymous

This and Nothing but Trouble were both films that I thought were fever dreams from my youth.

Anonymous

Absolutely loving this series of revisiting fondly remembered movies from years past and rewatching/discussing them now.

Anonymous

I thought it was a good movie at the time. Now on reflection there are goofy elements that I overlooked in my youth. Nevertheless, narratively, it really did work and I thought Mike and Jay did a nice job calling out the acting and effect elements that stood out. A little Starship Troopers cynicism. I'll probably still never watch it again.

One of my fav movies. Thanks for reviewing it!! 😄
