Happy Halloween, jerks! Light a candle, grab some candy corn, and get cozy cuz this is a long episode! Zombies, Draculas, Mummies, and a Man Freak Beast. We got it all this year. For Halloween, we went all out by bringing on a special celebrity guest named Rich Evans, and proceeded to watch two normal Halloween-y bad movies and then one film that is so deserving of a Spotlight episode that we basically devolved into one which is why the episode is so long. Halloween is saved! I had seen ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE on MST3K and the Blu-ray sports a really nice transfer with a fun commentary track. I think I may have to seek out DEVIL STORY.

That is some stunning set design. Rich Evans truly is a gift! Devil Story or ‘Once Upon A Time The Devil’ in its French version is something of a classic (if niche) bad movie in France. Beloved and digitised from 35mm film by the so-bad-its-good movie reference: Nanarland. Looks like you watched the VHS but if you have the 2021 Blu-Ray by Vinegar Syndrome lying around, know that the bonus features are great !

In one of the clips of Devil Story, you can briefly here the Grandpa call the horse something like "Devil Horse". In the original audio, that's how he keeps calling it. I'm sure everything makes much more sense, now. Regarding the location, Devil Story was shot in Normandy, and the story is set there. Most licence plates are French, that one from Florida is more a case of "they had access to" and "adds production value", in my opinion. For something a bit more structured, I'd recommend Zombie Lake. It's got quite the reputation, and for good reasons.

I can't retain my joy any longer^^ but I'm responsable for Devil Story. I'm french and this movie is a cult classic, the guys needed to see it. I found a beautiful special edition bluray at Vinegar Syndrome with subtitles and english dubbing. I bought it and send it to them back in march and I couldn't be happier seeing them having so much fun on halloween 🥹🥹🥹 and it's my birthday on the 29th ^^ I'm sure you guys can understand my silly happiness 😅

since it appears to be shot in England you can see the white cliffs of Dover, I'm pretty certain that the "Gothic castle" is the museum from the great Muppet caper, please ask Josh to verify ;)

Good ref, but it was shot in Normandie which has similar cliffs, most famously in Etretat. The castle is the Palais Bénédictine in Fécamp.

The French title would translate better as "Once upon a time, the devil." ("Il était une fois" is a stock phrase that starts French fairy tales.) So that might explain why the woman gathering wood is skipping through the forest. It seems like something that would be in a fairy tale. As for the rest of it… sorry, you're on your own.

I remember being in veterinary technology school and getting a handout about how to euthanize a rabid horse humanely. 1 picture was a horse with an x in the center of the forehead with a “shoot here” indicator. This guy would have never made it through Tulsa community college. What a buffoon!

I’m late to the game in responding, but this was a quality episode. The movies, the mojo, set, etc. were top notch. Last years left me wanting more, but this was everything I could have hoped for and more.
